Ithaca Students Will Be Locked In Classrooms (another liberal education success story)
Finger Lakes News Radio ^ | 2007-10-22 6:28 AM

After a week filled with rumors and absences, Ithaca High School has some changes ready for this week, and Ithaca City School District Superintendent Judith Pastel asks that students, parents and staff have patience as everyone adjusts.

The most obvious change students can expect to see will be locked classroom doors once classes start. Pastel said one recommendation that came from the Ithaca Police Department last week was to lock doors at the beginning of every class. Police and school officials are working together to ensure the students' safety. Locking classroom doors at the start of a class will make students more punctual and help identify which students are skipping class outright, Pastel said.

On Friday, an estimated 550 of the 1,600 students in the school missed a full day or up to four periods, Ithaca City School District Superintendent Judith Pastel said. An estimated 700 students were absent on Thursday, following rumors earlier in the week that something violent would occur at the school.

Some parents still intend to keep their children out of school.

“As of right now, I'm not comfortable sending my son back to school,” said Kari Cornell, who is keeping her son out of class. “But I'm so glad to hear that they're starting to take these concerns seriously.”

Cornell, who is a member of Concerned Parents of Caroline, said she wants to see how the district responds to a letter the group sent the district.

“I want a written response from the school district and board members before I'm comfortable sending my son back, and maybe I won't even be comfortable after that,” she said. “I need more than their word. I need to see progress.”

Jerry Achilles, of Enfield, is also keeping his daughter out of class today.

“I agree with the Concerned Parents of Caroline's demands, and I am going to make sure the school district is going to be enforcing these things before I send my daughter back,” he said.

Achilles said he liked the district's move to bring in personnel from the New York State Center for School Safety.

“I think that's good,” he said. “Somebody that's not from the school district needs to be looking into this.”

Achilles and Cornell said they both plan on being at Tuesday's school board meeting and possibly will voice their concerns about safety at the high school.

>>>Ithaca prides itself on being "the most enlightened city in America.<<<

Evidently the "Finger Lakes News Radio" media folks think that pointing out that race relations are at the heart of the lockdown would be too much enlightenment for the citizens of the most enlightened city in America.

I am appalled that nobody responded to "Um, what if there's a fire?" with, "I think violating fire codes and endangering the lives of children would be unwise at this juncture in your career."

Some back story:

A threat of violence at Ithaca High School prompted more than 800 students in the district to stay home from school Thursday.

Ithaca Police increased their presence at the school in response to escalating racial tensions.

Last week, fights broke out between white and black students after a group came to school dressed in camouflage.

Ithaca High School held two student forums to discuss the issues and will hold more in the future.

Another problem that could be solved with school vouchers.

>>>Ithaca prides itself on being “the most enlightened city in America.<<<

The people of this town are SO OPEN MINDED, their Brains have FALLEN OUT! Every couple years the owner of the ONLY “adult book store” is hauled in to court for one reason or another. Something in the law that they can’t get rid of it.

The only “Topless Bar” had a convenient “ELECTRICAL FIRE” after several years of trying to drive them out.
The Conventional wisdom here is that ... KARL ROVE created and Planted the “RATHERGATE” papers.
OH yes... and this is one of the ONLY AREAS where AIR AMERICA is actually LIstened to.

>I am going to guess this is not really locking students in, but locking out people who are late. It’s NYS law, I believe, that doors in classrooms and such cannot be locked on the inside for just the reason you stated...the need to quickly evacuate in an emergency.<<

Surely you are right - or in a fire they would likely roast.

Lockers? I thought they eradicated those because kids could hide contraband therein.

Um, what if there’s a fire?

This will help them keep an accurate body count.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

That 700 student were absent due to “rumors” of violence is the real story here. Notice that we can always depend on the liberal\Marxist media to focus on the irrelevant.

By the way,,,doesn’t this school’s reaction sound a lot like a prison “lock down”?

Once “locked” in their prison/schools ALL of their First Amendment rights are violated as well.

1) They are told to shut up for most of the day.

2) They are ordered by the state to associate only with people of the state’s choosing.

3) They can not publish freely.

4) They are forbidden to express their religion during their school prison time.

5) They are subjected to the government sponsored religion of Secular Humanism. Since there is no such thing as a religiously neutral education, the government WILL establish the religion of some and destroy the religion of others.

If the parent or child objects, armed police will force attendance, remove the child to foster care, or imprison the parents or child.

If a citizen refuses to pay for this abomination, he will have his home or business sold at sheriffs action.

(real bullets on those guns on the hip)

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$44

Oh...and of course the cost of that police presence will not be included in the price it costs to educated a government schooled child. That cost will be off the books but still paid for by the taxpayer.

That is a cogent exegesis of the current state of the public education establishment. Great post.

Here is a similar syllogism which I wrote as a post to an article describing the sexploitation of white British girls by Muslim boys of color:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1911248/posts

Mothers of prevention (White schoolgirls in UK falling prey to Muslim pimps)

Let's see how left-wing statism works:

1) the state uses its near monopoly of physical power to force you to send your kids to places of indoctrination called, "schools."

2) the state, for reasons of political correctness involving race and religion, fails to protect your children in these places of indoctrination.

3) the state, again for reasons of political correctness involving race and religion, secures for itself a monopoly of the right to use force to protect children and prohibits you from acting directly to protect your children either in or out of school.

4) the state, in response to your complaints that your children are being exploited because the state has failed in spite of its monopoly of power to protect them, replies that to protect your children would cause politically inconvenient and incorrect race and religious problems.

5) if you complain loudly enough or in the wrong venues, and you will be called a racist or a bigot.

6) the state renders racism and bigotry into hate crimes laws criminalizing the complainers.

6) since the state identifies what is "correct" politically, at least partially, according to one's racial status, the state applies the rules invidiously among its citizens according to their color.

7) if you are of the correct color, the state is loathe to prosecution you for your crimes.

8) if you are of the wrong color, the state has effectively left you defenseless against crimes committed by people of the "correct" color.

9) if you resort to self-help for your own protection under these circumstances, or for the protection of your children, you are liable to prosecution.

10) since the state has abandoned God-given inalienable rights, natural rights, and even individual rights in exchange for group identity rights's as the rationale for governance, it is incapable of ameliorating the social consequences of its political philosophy and governing justly.

11) having monopolized power, denuded its citizens, set one tribe against the other, the state finds itself choosing between (dis)integration or ruthless suppression.

You know, this wouldn't bother me too much if you weren't required at the point of a gun to buy their product with your taxes, and then if you don't like it, you have to go and buy the competitor's product too.

They should convert to a pure fee-for-service model and then they can engage in any socialist wet dream they want to and people who like that sort of thing can go there and the rest of us can vote with our feet and dollars.

So if I took $100,000 from her and gave half to my wife it would be OK because two people benefitted and only one was harmed? You know, good of the greater number and all that rot.
