Indians from India are Caucasions.

That depends hugely on how you define your terms -- terms that, for the most part, don't have a scientific definition. While the "Aryan" race is said to have its origins in the subcontinent -- and the Nazis even sent an expedition to Tibet to chart its roots -- most of the current occupants of India are described as Dravidian.

As with most questions of "race," Jindal's race comes down to the only definition that ever counted, "I know it when I see it." Is Jindal "non-white?" Look at him. Duh.

“most of the current occupants of India are described as Dravidian.”

Not quite. The Dravidians are mainly associated with South and South Central India (represented by the 4 southern states). Indians elsewhere in the subcontinent (about 80% of the population) are of Aryan descent. Then, there are communities of Aryan descent in South India too (and these folks are often the targets of discrimination by the darker-hued “Dravidians”).

Just as with actual people from Africa who come to the US are often denied the title African American.

The word Aryan and Dravidian are politically debated and their application by europeans, iranians and so many other people only adds to the confusion. Its easier to use Caucasian, but Russians and other eastern white people dont regard them self as such. They use that word to identify those from the Caucas regions - Georgian, Armenian, Azeris - etc.

India has three main groups of people. North, south and north-eastern people. One can distinguish between them by their facial features than skin color, since in this day and age every one is mixing. Northies have prominent caucasian features and many have light eyes. Southies have (typically) aboriginal+ caucasian mixed features. North-easterners are mostly a hybrid mixture of Indians and Chinese.

Now even though Jindal’s parents are from Punjab, north punjabi, he is a bit dark complexioned than the average Punjabi. His wife looks more north indian than him.

Bollywood movies teach us that the average punjabi couple looks like this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=NM1MUgW4sqE
