In a speech to 2,000 conservative evangelicals at the Family Research Council's "Values Voters Summit" in Washington, Republican Fred Thompson made some headway with conservative Christians who've been left uninspired during the desultory days of his first month on the presidential campaign trail.
Thompson used personal experience to court them, with references to his own plan to pray and to what he characterized as the life-changing experience of seeing a sonogram of his unborn daughter.
Late in his speech, Thompson said he's been asked what he'd do in his first 100 days as president. His answer, he said, is "I don't really knowit would depend on the circumstances."
"But," he said, "I know what I would do the first hour: Go into the Oval Office, close the door, and pray for the wisdom to do what was right." The crowd was quickly on its feet, warmly applauding; it was his best-received sentiment of the day.
Earlier, when laying out his antiabortion bona fides, Thompson focused, emotionally at times, on his role as a father, including the "ultimate tragedy" of the death of an adult daughter from his first marriage and the "ultimate blessing" of the birth of a child.
Thompson, who has two young children with his second wife, told the audience that his political record and his "head" have always been against abortion, but it took seeing the first sonogram of his now 3-year-old daughter, Hayden, to transform him.
"My heart, he said, "is now fully engaged with my head."
His biggest competition for conservative support, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, was scheduled to address the evangelicals tonight. In prepared remarks, he said that " the family is a vital economic unit, the foundation of our nation. And it is the strength of this nation's families that ultimately determines America's strength in the family of nations." Rudy Giuliani, who is leading national GOP presidential preference polls--and supports legal abortion and opposes a constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage--was to enter the lion's den Saturday.
All the GOP candidates accepted invitations to speak to the evangelicals. The results of a straw poll of attendees and online voters will be announced Saturday.
I don’t know that there ever was a vote on first trimester abortion. I just know that I heard was not totally pro=life like the Fredheads would have you to believe.
Correction- I just know that Fred...........
Don't know, don't care. Of course I don't expect either one of those hacks to have an idea either as they are mostly platforms of platitudes as well. Just pointing out Fred hasn't added anything to the campaign that wasn't coming in some fashion from any of the other 'frontrunners'.
As far as I know not one candidate on either side has spelled out a 1st 100 days agenda.
When was he EVER pro-choice? Do you have ANY evidence to support that, or are you just throwing out lies and distortions and running away like the media do?
It should be noted that other coverage stories on other sites show that the largest ovation was for Huckabee(though he will not win the nomination) and that Rudy actually got polite applause and afterwards many gave him 7-10 points for presentation. We shall see whether the national polls and primary state polls show any movement after this Values Convention. The idea for all of us is to beat Her Highness. Whoever can do that , gets my vote.
You WIN the retort of the year award!
'series', that's a keeper :-)
It comes down to whether life begins at conception. I dont know in my own mind if that is the case so I dont feel the law ought to impose that standard on other people. - Fred Thompson
I do not believe abortion should be criminalized. - Fred Thompson
Your opinion sounds rather like a prejudice against slow-talking reflectiveness instead of soundbites and also Thompson's Southern accent. Many outside my region are fooled by the drawl. The discerning realize that a drawl and thinking before speaking are not contra-indicators of brain-power. Fred was intelligent enough to weigh all aspects of this race and then allow himself to be drafted to run. He had no intention of becoming a professional politician. In contrast, check out the long-term professions of all the rest except Huckabee.
Sounds like he really bombed at the Florida GOP convention yesterday. To the dismay of the crowd, he only spoke for 4 minutes and 37 seconds.

Are you saying he never signed the Planned Parenthood oath?
Are you saying he never signed the Planned Parenthood oath?
Let me see the one with his real signature on it not some wordpress software!
Interesting numbers to the CBS News Poll. Do you have a time frame when it was conducted?
Yes
Two former governors, Mitt Romney of Massachusetts and Mike Huckabee of Arkansas, shared the limelight on Saturday, handily winning the top two spots in a straw poll of “values voters” conducted by the conservative Family Research Council in Washington.
In the straw poll Romney came in first with 1,595 votes, followed closely by Huckabee with 1,565.
Significantly, however, Huckabee won more than half of the 953 voters who voted at the conference; Romney received 99 votes among conference attendees, with the overwhelming majority of his support coming from voters online.
Ron Paul finished in third place with 865 votes, followed by former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson with 564 votes.
Nobody denies he did it. He doesn’t. Planned Parenthood sure doesn’t deny it. It was WIDELY reported at the time.
This is not “fake but accurate,” and you sure as HELL are not Buckhead.
Than show me where he said it?
It is not my job to prove to you established facts just because you have decided to divorce yourself from reality.
Google it. It remains just as true whether you believe it or not, whether I prove it to you or not. You’re entitled to your own opinion, but you are NOT entitled to your own facts.
I know who’s going to win the straw poll.
Ron Paul’s disciples will spam it, as they do everything else. And he’ll still get less than three percent of the actual real life vote.

That is so true and it will be so obvious to the viewer who studies those photos by compared to the offical two documented signature!:)
