China Aims To Provide All With Healthcare By 2020

The central government has announced its goal of providing everyone in the country with basic healthcare by 2020. It's an ambitious goal for a nation that will have a population of 1.5 billion by then.

Making healthcare affordable and easily accessible is a top priority for many countries. But the task is much harder in China, the world's most populous nation.

Gao Qiang, Vice Minister of Health, said, "I think the goal of offering every Chinese basic healthcare is enormous. It will be an arduous task. We have to make sure every citizen, including the huge rural population, will be covered."

But the size of the population is only one of many difficulties.

Gao Qiang said, "The most notable problem right now is that many people have no easy access to medical care. We still have a considerable number of urban and rural residents who have not joined any medical insurance system. Moreover, medical services are public welfare services. We need to stop those hospitals that make profit by selling medicine."

China started to reform its healthcare system in the early 1990s. Today, it has extended medical insurance to 170 million urban residents.

A rural cooperative medical insurance system was launched in 2003 to offer farmers basic healthcare. So far, more than eighty percent of the rural population have participated in the insurance scheme. And this year, unemployed urban residents and children will also be covered by the system.

Healthcare officials say the focus of their current work is to help employees in small firms join the medical insurance system.

Being the communist utopia that China is, I am shocked, just shocked that they do not already have free health care for all.

I speed-read the “Economist” article on that subject. It was not too encouraging.

Did they have Hillary in there as a consultant? Was this her 1993/4 plan recycled? How many doctors do they have?

Wait a minute, what about all of Mao’s “barefoot doctors”? Are they all playing golf?

I suggest we put our socialist health care on hold until we see the results of China’s in 2020. Not too much to ask is it?

And just what sort of healthcare will be available to a pregnant mother of one in Communist China’s 2020 plan?

Couldn’t we just send the beast there?

She would be among friends who think much more like her than we do, and she could set up their own Chinese hillarycare system in the largest country in the world.

That would show us Freepers!

what about all of Mao’s “barefoot doctors”?

They failed to train enough "peoples' revolutionary podiatrists" to take care of the barefoot doctors.

It’d be a nice gesture if Hillary just moved there instead and helped them attempt the massive healthcare program they are seeking to create, the environment would be more conducive to her style.. besides she and Bubba threw their lot in with China years ago..

Isn't this the same government accused of harvesting the organs of condemned prisoners (especially POLITICAL prisoners)?

Universal Health care, but you might not like it...

Excellent idea! They are practically calling her name! Buy her a one-way ticket.

Here is my wonderful experience with Chinese health care. In June 2000, my wife and I adopted a baby girl. During the adoption process in China, my daughter had an ear problem. The adoption facilitator took us to a local clinic in a big city. The smell of urine permeated the entire clinic. The doctor looked at my daughter’s ear using a big mirror on his head. He did not have an otoscope to view the inside of her ear. The doctor insisted that he could see inside her ear with the mirror on his head. The doctor wanted to examine her throat using a tong depressor that he obtained from a dirty bin. It looked like the wooden depressors were being reused from patient to patient. We would not let him put that instrument in her mouth.

The best part was the price. The price including some prescription drugs was about $6. The joys of socialized medicine.

“participated in the insurance scheme’

Hmmm. Sort of like a rancher. Great care for the steer from birth to the donor hospital....er.. slaughter house.

Earlier, better care makes for better quality organ donors, ummm beef steaks.

120 million yet to be served!

Hey! They're going to solve their problem the way Mao would.

Meanwhile..

Hillary, here's the health plan you asked for. Want Mao with that?

Hillary is collecting all kinds of campaign donations (much of them bogus) from the immigrant Chinese community in New York by making those same promises. Hmmmm. Hillary and the Chinese have a lot in common.

Do a search on FR it is an LA Times article.
