WASHINGTON (CNN) Florida Sen. Mel Martinez stepped down Friday as general chairman of the Republican National Committee, after serving just nine months on the job.
Martinez, who is the GOPs most prominent Latino lawmaker, said he accomplished his goal of helping put the RNC in the best position for the 2008 elections.
It was my goal as General Chairman to lead the Party as it established the structure and raised the resources necessary to support our Presidential candidate and ensure Republican victories next November, the Florida senator said in a prepared statement released by the RNC. I believe we have accomplished those goals. Thats why it is the appropriate time for me to step down as General Chairman and continue to focus my energy on serving my constituents in Florida.

Good!
GFR
Translation:
I have screwed the party and divided it supporting RINO’s like myself all the while making obscene amounts of money. Now that the base is angered and donations are down 50% it is time for me to leave this dry hole and pursue other revenue adventures.
Please, oh please, get a Conservative to take over.
Real embarrassment over immigration. Did not have a clue how base was going to react.
Good riddance to that loser.
He should have never had the job in the first place.
Now if they get somebody in there that thinks like the vast majority of Americans that don’t want to grant AMNESTY than the GOP might start getting some donations again.
And his leaving is more likely to make that happen than all of his other efforts combined.
Secure the borders!
Deport the illegals!
I hope the new Chair will be someone with some degree of testicular fortitude that has been so severly lacking in the RNC. Martinez has been worthless. Even his claim of leaving the party in a better position financially is suspect with the DNC out fundraising the RNC significantly.
Real fine job ya did Mel.
Oh, I dunno. The 'pubbies have nowhere to go but up, so in a sense....
Don’t let the door hit ya..
It should have been Michael Steele but the President just HAD to have his point man on amnesty in the Senate as the figurehead.
Apparently “The Hitmen” aren’t just a myth.
Well that is start, we need a Lee Atwater like person.
Now there is some damn good news for a change!Made my day.
Amen!
I wonder how many thousands of the "Bush Pesos" Mel and the RNC received in response to donation requests, I know I sent a couple.
