Democratic White House front-runner Hillary Clinton stood up for Gov. Spitzer's efforts to pull illegal immigrants "out of the shadows" - but stopped short of backing his controversial plan to grant them driver's licenses. Clinton told a newspaper in New Hampshire, home to the first-in-the-nation presidential primary, that Spitzer's got the right idea.
"I know exactly what Gov. Spitzer's trying to do and it makes a lot of sense, because he's trying to get people out of the shadows," Clinton told the editorial board of the Nashua Telegraph. "He's trying to say, 'Okay, come forward and we will give you this license.'"
Spitzer has faced strong opposition - even from many fellow Democrats - for proposing to grant licenses to undocumented residents, insisting it will help track criminals and improve road safety.
A recent Siena poll showed an overwhelming 72% of New Yorkers oppose Spitzer's plan.
Clinton was careful to say immigration...must be addressed on a national level.
"I mean, this can't work state-by-state. It has to be looked at comprehensively," said the former First Lady, who applauded President Bush for attempting immigration reform.
Team Spitzer, which has faulted federal failures in dealing with immigration, welcomed the positive - if tempered - support from Clinton.
"We are gratified that many state leaders understand the security value of bringing people out of the shadows and into the system," said spokeswoman Christine Anderson.

She’s going to get whiplash pulling all those g’s banking hard to the right.
Actually Hillary is being quire consistent as Drivers Licenses could be abused as an method of identification when registering to vote. Illegal Aliens have the right to vote for her as many times as they wish.
Why doesn’t she pull all of her past records out of the “shadows”? That would be more interesting. I still believe that if someone is running for President of this country, the people have the right to know everything about them.
Actually, I am begining to favor finger printing and a national ID. If they are going to be here, might as well make them legal and collect taxes.
I agree with Hillary that they shouldn’t be in the shadows. They should be in Mexico.
There’s one other purpose. Legal residents are fleeing NYS so fast that we’re probably going to lose a couple of House seats next time around. It’s not a coinkydink that Spitzer started with Upstate.
Uh, how is that going to allow taxes to be collected if they are still being paid under the table?
well put!
The only sure thing Hillary stands on is herself.
This is the operative statement. She is far from "banking hard to the right." This is the pro-amnesty crowd's terminology for granting legal status to every illegal here. Hillary is banking hard to the Left. This is the position she took when addressing the huge demonstrations of illegals who chanted, "Today we march, tomorrow we vote!!!"
Exactly. This is very cynical way of getting more votes. Obviously the “undocumented aliens” will vote for those who favor amnesty and granting driving priveleges.
I have been watching Lou Dobbs talk about this and I am waiting for his head to explode.
Yup. I am one of them, and many people I am friends with are looking to leave the Democratik People's Worker's Repulik of New York when they find work in another state, or at retirement, which ever comes first. Ruthless, dishonest politicians and the labor unions who control them have made New York a hellhole for all but the super wealthy Manhattanites, public sector employees, and "undocumented."
“She is trying to have it both ways, of course”
On illegals, yeah, and Iraq too: She was against it before she was for it; **on one hand, but on the other hand**; and “I remain firm—but flexible!” . . . the demi-sheep will forget and follow a year from now.
This country would be better served if we lopped one arm off every liberal.
