I’ve always thought that it made a lot of sense to have all officer candidates selected from the NCO ranks, but the way we do it now seems to work well enough — which is why I guess there is no pressure to change it.
The best officers I remember from my USN service were all mustangs. The worst, or the most disliked, always seemed to be the ring-knockers.
