He did not do anything wrong.

Taking $30,000 for a no-show jopb with a company that he would be doing business with in his new procurement position isn't wrong?

It is far more believable that he knew he'd be convicted of some crime and his wife would be devastaed financially. Maybe he cared more for his wife's financial future than his own life.
