"ut why should the scouts get free land from the city?" Why should womens shelters, community clubs, Sports clubs etc etc etc. There's a very long list that get "free" land/building use from cities. Screw them all I say, especially sports clubs. They suck hundreds of millions out of the cities...Screw them all, why should tax payers subsidize privately owned franchises, owned by rich elitists who rake in countless millions from them. They can pay their own way, pay rent, build their own stadiums, pay for the roads and sewer services, the policing, and everything else they burden the city's taxpayers with.

They are not getting free land. They are getting a nominal rental fee because THE SCOUTS BUILT THE BUILDING, per the full story that is linked in the excerpt shown here. What we don't know are the full terms of the original agreement between the Scouts and the city, and whether the agreemet had an expiration date or any other provisions that would allow the city to unilaterally terminate or amend it.

Why did Michael Dell get free land in Nashville that it now seems obvious his company has no plans to use it?

They are not getting free land! The city is not giving them the land. It is letting them use it for $1 per year in return for building the building on it.
If the city does not want to rent to the BSA anymore then they should get their building back.
