Romney Calls Global Body a 'Failure'

By JIM DAVENPORT
Associated Press
18 October 2007

PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — Republican White House hopeful Mitt Romney called the United Nations a failure on Thursday and said he would support a new coalition of the free nations of the world.

The former Massachusetts governor said the U.N. Human Rights Council has repeatedly condemned Israel while taking no action against nations with repressive regimes.

"The United Nations has been an extraordinary failure of late," Romney said in response to a question at a pancake house along the coast of early voting South Carolina. "We should withdraw from the United Nations Human Rights Council."

Actually, the United States doesn't have a seat on the human rights council, which it has been boycotting.

Romney also said he would support a new "coalition of the free nations of the world and bring those nations together so that we can act together."

"We should develop some of our own — if you will — forums and alliances or groups that have the ability to actually watch out for the world and do what's right," Romney said.

Romney was sharing the political attention in this state with GOP rival John McCain, who is on his second consecutive day of campaigning here.

McCain, in an interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday, accused both Russia and China of causing gridlock in the U.N. Security Council and hindering the world body's ability to sanction Iran or address pressing matters in Darfur, Burma and other trouble spots.

If elected, McCain said he would form a league of democracies to circumvent the Security Council and enact tough sanction against Iran and other problem countries.

Romney, who has been criticized for his changing view on abortion, was also asked where he stood on the issue that is important to voters in this conservative state.

"I am pro life and I am proud to be pro life," Romney said.

The former governor also said he would oppose using federal dollars for abortions and would appoint Supreme Court justices opposed to abortions.

He said he opposes using cloning or practices that create human cells for stem cell research.

When he gets the backbone to say, “The United States should tear up our UN membership card and remove the communist organization from US soil immediately.”, that is the day that I will make a large contribution and very likely vote for the man. Until then, no chance.

If he means it, I could get on board.

If he means it, there is no way to know for sure.

"We should withdraw from the United Nations Human Rights Council." Not the UN as a whole.
I think your remarks in parantheses are misleading. That said, Romney moves up a couple of notches.

I can finally agree with something hea says.

When I opened this thread, I was excited that finally, there was a reason to support someone. Alas, the headline is misleading. He is proposing to withdraw only from the Human Rights Commission, which we have been boycotting for years anyway.

Had he said the UN, the Romney stickers would have gone up on my car this afternoon.

While not anti-Romney, this appears to be his postitioning as the opposite of Rudy. He has constantly moved to the conservative points has he developed his run. It keeps Thompson from marginalizing him.

As long as he looks better on the tube than Fred, he figures he is the choice instead of Rudy.

Sure, if it’s in the GOP platform & Romney endorses:
`right to life’; 2nd Amend. upheld; an attorney general strong on border security/enforcement/deportation; and a US quitclaim deed to UN security council, plus an appropriate rent, no more diplo. immunity; property tax bills, etc.
That’s a good start. You know those things won’t be on the dhimmis’ wish list.
Conventions will be over by this time and we’ll be looking the election in the eye a year from now. To put it crudely, we’re nearing the short-strokes. Times drawing short to `get biddy’ with a conservative candidate who can win, and saying these things—saved by the pajamadheen for later re-play.
Is Romney the One? Gee, he’s a little desultory as a conservative, but I’m no Morpheus.
I’d vote for Aaron Burr if you dug him up and he signed on to:
`right to life’; 2nd Amend. upheld; an attorney general strong on border security/enforcement/deportation; and a US quitclaim deed to UN security council, plus an appropriate rent, no more diplo. immunity; property tax bills, etc.

"The United Nations has been an extraordinary failure of late," Romney said

Since 10/24/1945, to be precise.

Ron Paul has been consistent on the idea that the US transferring decisions to world bodies is UnConstitutional.

And he also is right about going to the UN for a “Mother May I” before going into Iraq or Afghanistan is Extra Consitutional.

Mitt is taking a few small steps, I’ll give him that much.

I know but you have to go on something. Everyone here is still waiting for Fred’s big ideas. I have not heard any from him. I am no Romney person, but his saying this is interesting. Also Hucabee’s Fair tax also interesting.

This could make me support him if he is nominated.

The UN is a morally banrupt association of corrupt third world dictators bankrolled by the American Taxpayer.

Its past time we roll up the carpet, kick them in the butt and throw their parasitic, arrogant, socfflaw and criminal “diplomats” in their weird costumes out of America.

Exactly.

Although he is not my top choice, he is a great improvement over Rudy & Hillary.

Good for Mitt! The UN is a useless, impotent debating society and nothing else. Some will make the argument that at least the nations talking is better than them not talking. Fair enough.

Here in South Carolina we have Sen Graham and DeMint.Graham is a sorry McCainiac and DeMint a hard core conservative (he is currently trying to keep our taxes from funding some hippie farce of a museum “honoring” the 1969 commie rally called “Woodstock”).
Both Ann Coulter and Jim DeMint like Mitt.It will take a darn clever Freeper to convince me to support someone else.
Remember,South Carolina primary voters now pick the next president—Iowa and NH are supperflous.
