During a difficult pregnancy, Elizabeth Jones was monitored every day because doctors were worried about the health of her baby.
But on the day of the birth, she was twice turned away from the hospital because it was full - forcing her partner to deliver the baby himself at their home.
Miss Jones, 24, and her partner Anthony Jones - who coincidentally share the same surname - dashed to their local maternity unit when she started to have strong contractions.
However, their excitement at the prospect of the birth soon turned to horror when staff on the ward told them: "Sorry we are full. Come back later."
(snip)
"It was a great experience - but at the time I wished we were in hospital in a controlled environment," Mr Jones, 39, said. "What if something had gone wrong?
"It's worrying that the only maternity hospital for miles around had to turn us away twice just while Elizabeth was in the last stages of labour.
"You hear so much about the NHS being under pressure but you would think that maternity would be a priority. Many things can wait for a later appointment - but never a baby.
(snip)
"I just saw Emily's head coming out as the paramedics arrived. But they said I was doing a good job and I should just carry on.

A spokesman for the hospital said: "The maternity unit from time to time experiences peaks in demand and during the last 12 months we have seen an increase in births at the Princess of Wales Hospital.
"We can confirm that it was necessary for this unit to close recently for a short time to new maternity admissions due to the unit reaching full capacity."

Hope springs eternal. They may get 'round to it someday...
Ours is full of sinners...
“How about some reality; illegitimate is what the parents have done to the baby.”
BS. That baby is no less legitimate than you or I. No less a person, no less anything.
“I know in my church we have all sorts of people in all sorts of situations, and we love them all.”
You are right, mine was not a fair statement. The “holier-than-though” judgmentalism just brings back memories from some of my personal church experiences.
God-less?
He: I'm not going to your church. It's full of hypocrites.
She: There's always room for one more.
“Come back later”. LOL.
According to a previous article, this is actually a married couple. Is this some kind of sarcastic comment on new PC style recommendations?
“Do you think it doesnt matter?”
Sure it matters. Never said it didn’t. The family unit is the basis of civilization. That said, no child is illegitimate. We should not transfer the sins of the parents onto the children. They may be born out of wedlock which statistically puts them at a disadvantage but I do not believe in derogatory labeling of the innocent. If stigma is to be applied, focus on the parents and leave the innocent child out of it.
Just to add, illegitimate in this context means strictly not born into a family. A family is what is created in a marriage ceremony (modern redefinition notwithstanding). As such the label illegitimate addresses a need of the child that is not being met i.e its a criticism of the parents.
With them having the same last name, the writer of the previous article may have incorrectly assumed that they were married.
Yeah, that little person is ÂilligitimateÂ. The hospital was right not to deal with those sinners. /s You are on a disgusting roll this morning. That child did nothing to deserve any label you apply to it. I have no doubt you claim to be some kind of Christian. Your kind is why I will not set foot in a church.
il·le·git·i·mate Function: adjective Date: 1536 1: not recognized as lawful offspring; specifically : born of parents not married to each other
FACT:The child is illegitimate, and I also spelled it correctly.
FACT:The hospital said they were full, no mention of a turn away because the adults are to lazy or lack motivation to marry so BOTH of their children can have a family unit.
What does being a Christian have anything to do with being able to have an opinion? You don't go to church so you are allowed to say anything you want without retort? Naaa, don't think so.
Your kind is why I will not set foot in a church.
I don't believe you. This is my opinion, I think you like to think everything goes. You just don't like it when others call you or someone else on the carpet regarding a situation. No rules, no foundation, just a political and personal platform built on quicksand. No laws and no rules means we have no civilized society.
“I believe the scientific term you are looking for is bastard. That is what the child is, through no fault of its own. Sad.”
Indeed. I’m trying to imagine carrying a label like that for life. “Bastard”. It’s a terrible thing to do to a child. Something I don’t believe we should be doing. It seems to only serve to further lessen the child’s chances, especially in the formidable years.
guess once we have socialized medicine here, I should just plan on having the rest of my children at home. Bummer about the lack of epidural, though.
“This is my opinion, I think you like to think everything goes. You just don’t like it when others call you or someone else on the carpet regarding a situation.”
You are entitled to any opinion you wish to hold but you will be mistaken. I have a real problem with out-of-wedlock births for the obvious reasons. Funny, people who know me would laugh at the “anything goes” notion.
My point on this thread is that the child should not be labeled as “illegitimate” because of the actions of the parents. I could care less what a dictionary says on the matter. Applying a stigma to those with no choice in the matter is wrong, IMO. It’s “us” and “them” BS. More divisions, more labels, more grouping, more crap.
Any excuse not to go to church will work. If you want to blame it on me, feel free.
Personally, I’d prefer that people go to parents and inform them that illegitimacy really isn’t good for their children. It’s amazing that so many parents really don’t know this.
