Signs Point to an Evangelical Revival for Romney...
The American Prospect ^ | October 17, 2007 | Sarah Posner

Posted on 10/17/2007 6:43:28 PM PDT by Reaganesque

With the Family Research Council/Focus on the Family "Values Voter" Summit just days away, FRC President Tony Perkins hinted to reporters that Mitt Romney's Mormonism isn't such a big deal after all. Perkins' cult-shmult conference call came on the heels of evangelical public relations guru Mark DeMoss sending a five-page letter of support for Romney to evangelical leaders. (DeMoss, who has worked with many major evangelical figures, including the late Jerry Falwell, has volunteered for Romney's campaign since last year.)

In the letter, DeMoss invoked Falwell, suggesting that his old mentor never would have sat out an election (i.e., voted for a third-party candidate) when two, and possibly four Supreme Court appointments were on the line. "I believe we can make a difference -- the difference in this election," wrote DeMoss, "and if Mitt Romney should become the 44th president of the United States, I'm confident he won't forget how he got there."

(here's the new bit:)

John Hagee, president of Christians United for Israel (CUFI), said on Glenn Beck's television program that he could vote for Romney despite his religion "because I know him to be moral, I know him to have high principles, I know him to believe in a work ethic, I know that he has a family orientation that is very devout, and very pure, and that is basically the social problem that's destroying the fabric of this country right now. The family is coming unraveled." (Take that, twice-divorced Giuliani, from the once-divorced pastor!)

Focus on the Family came under fire from its own grassroots supporters for James Dobson's agitation for a third-party alternative to Rudy Giuliani, which they believed would amount to a Hillary Clinton victory. On his radio program Friday, Dobson protested, "I'm only one person. I don't tell other people how to vote." Where in the world did anyone get that idea?

Mike Huckabee, who thus far has been deprived of Dobson’s stamp of approval, politely called Dobson on his “who, me?” routine. He lamented in a PBS interview, "I think that some of them [Christian conservative leaders] frankly are more intoxicated with power than principle."

Bob Novak insisted that Giuliani is the Christian right's guy because he's the one who is tough on security, the new "values" issue. (Perhaps Novak should ask New York City firefighters what they think about that.) Beliefnet's God-o-Meter asked, "Is God-o-Meter the only one who still doubts that most churchgoing evangelicals will back America's Mayor?" I'm with God-o-Meter. “Churchgoing evangelicals” (or churchgoers in general) are not necessarily conservative.

The results of Friday's Values Voters Summit should be very interesting. We'll see. We'll see. Hey, and "Summit"? Come on! SumMIT? Coincidence? I don't think so! ;-)

Just as an aside, what is Novak smoking?

"I think that some of them [Christian conservative leaders] frankly are more intoxicated with power than principle."

Did Huckabee consider the possibility that they and others like them simply do not want this country dragged down to Mexico's level? We can do a lot more to help Mexico if we don't become a carbon copy thereof by letting them colonize us.

The single-social-issue Right is just another constituency, along with the Chamber of Commerce, economic libertarians, defense/veterans, and others. They give more heat than light, IMHO. How much do they raise for the GOP? Local/state races? It's no coincidence that Governor Huckabee is very quietly improving his poll numbers and ground game. Let's all work together, eh?

I like Gov. Huckabee. He’s impressed me over the past months.

I like the entire field (except for the Texas congressman) and will work my ass off for the nominee.

Huckabee has impressed - he obviously has razor-sharp boots on the ground.

Sadly, they might give Romney enough of a push to dilute the vote far enough for Rudy to win the nomination. With Thompson, Romney, and Huckabee (he is climbing fast) splitting the more Conservative voters, Rudy might just pull it off. His voters won’t likely go for real Conservatives.

Hagee speaks for a lot of Evangelicals. I agree with him on many things. Of course I’d like to know which Mitt Romney we’d be electing. The newly minted “Conservative” or the center-left Mitt Romney that ran against Ted Kennedy in Massachusetts?

I realize that Mitt is saying all the things that we Evangelicals are supposed to like hearing, the question with him is, “can he be trusted?”

Hagee, arguably, is a bigger voice than Dobson, depending, as always, on the representative sample.

Romney is a decent candidate, and likely a good guy. He knows where his bread is buttered.

I’m more of a Hagee guy than a Dobson guy.

“Romney is a decent candidate, and likely a good guy. He knows where his bread is buttered.”

Likely true on both points but can he be trusted?

Just as an aside, what is Novak smoking?

Good question.

Novak's attempt to finesse Rooty by minmizing so/con issues won't work---Rooty is not only alien to conservative values, he and his Rooters are working to religiously cleanse the Repub Party, and dump so/cons off the party lifeboat.

Fact is, Rooty belatedly discovered he actually needs conservatives to make a showing. Too frickin' bad----he made his bed---let him lie in it.

=====================================

THE CASE AGAINST GIULIANI Americans don't want Rooty's irrational mentality in our White House. First and foremost: conservatives are disgusted with abortion worshipper Giuliani---a gun-grabbing RINO who is working assiduously to religiously cleanse the Repub party. The Rooters are obsessed with dumping so/cons off the party lifeboat.

A religiously-cleansed America, erased of The Founder's principles, would perforce adhere to Rooty's irrational, valueless mentality, one that has no relevance to deep American traditions.

Rooty and his Tooters offend the sensibilities of patriotic religious Americans nurtured by a democracy built on freedom of religion. Under Giuliani, people of religion would be subjugated to second-class citizenship.

The contrast between Giuliani and Mitt Romney is staggering. Romney vigorously defends his faith. In an increasingly secular society, it is heartening that a candidate not only espouses a faith but actually defends his faith to voters.

We may not all agree with Romeney's belief system, but the fact that a US president recognizes the importance if religion is a very big plus.

“Mitt Romney just doesn’t talk the talk about family values, he lives it!”

Surprising to hear his staunch defense of abortion rights while governor of Mass however.
More than once he defended the right of a woman to kill her baby.
He brought up a family member who died during an illegal abortion.

Mitt Romney just doesn't talk the talk about family values, he lives it!

That's what Joel Osteen said. Osteen, named "Most Influential Christian in America" in 2006, said this about Romney on Larry King:

KING: How do you feel about Mitt Romney and being a Mormon? Would that affect whether you vote for him or not?

J. OSTEEN: Well, you know what? I look at people, their character, their values, what they stand for. And I know only Mitt from watching him on your program and reading a couple of articles about him. And I don't think that that would affect me. I've heard him say that he believes Jesus is his savior, just like I do. I've studied it deeply, and maybe people don't agree with me, but I like to look at a person's value and what they stand for.
