With Hitchcock, there is no need to presuppose some malevolent supernatural force or creature from outer space; it's the next-door neighbor, an ordinary sea-gull, your uncle or spouse, the motel manager - someone you don't initially suspect - or never suspect at all.

In the same light, the scariest Stephen King book/movie (in my opinion) was Cujo.
