Romney Can’t Believe He’s Losing to These Guys
New York Observer ^ | October 16, 2007 | Jennifer Rubin

On paper, Mitt Romney seems the most attractive G.O.P. contender. He has business and executive experience, a fine family and no connection to the “Washington mess.”

Yet his chance to win the nomination is slipping away. His national poll numbers barely hit double digits, his New Hampshire lead is vanishing, and he’s spending millions of dollars just to keep afloat.

As he stood next to Fred Thompson at the Dearborn debate looking puzzled, one was reminded of the Saturday Night Live skit in which the Michael Dukakis character looked at the George H. W. Bush figure and said incredulously, “I can’t believe I’m losing to this guy.”

There are several popular explanations, ranging from his now-renounced liberal past to his religion, but it is also something more fundamental than any of that: Mitt Romney is the least adept politician in the field and comes across as the least in tune to Republicans’ dominant concerns. In interacting with voters, he often appears to be at a shareholders’ meeting, impatiently waiting out an obstreperous protestor so he can resume his prepared remarks.

In New Hampshire’s Red Arrow Diner earlier this year, he seemed unmoved as a waitress described her family’s medical difficulties, robotically informing her of his Massachusetts medical plan’s low deductibles.

Mitt's superiority evidently hasn't impressed everyone as this author notes.

I could vote for him, but only as a last resort.

He and Edwards both seem like greatly polished metrosexuals.

Ditto.

Actually, as more than a last resort. Mr. Romney and Mr. Thompson are both on my short list.

After I watched the last debate, however, Mr. Thompson went up a peg and Mr. Romney dropped a peg, in my view.

Mitt’s problem is that his touted experience is less than stellar. Business experience is just that - BUSINESS experience. Leading a shareholder meeting does not mean you’ll make the right decisions in a military crisis, nor that you’ll make moral choices in the realm of public policy. His executive experience, as well, is somewhat tarnished by the fact that it was obtained through his tenure as the somewhat inept governour of Massachusetts - a RINO placeholder that Mass had in between more politically muscular Democrats.

Can you point out what is better executive experience? Running a group of senate interns?

I agree that Mitt has his flaws. For example, I was deeply disturbed by his comments about consulting lawyers when deciding to attack Iran, and his hesitations about saying that the surge is working before Gen Petreus testimony.

However, executive experience is not one of them. He created a business empire, was the head of Olympics soon after 9/11 and he was the governor (even if in blue state where he could not properly carry out his policy).

“Business experience is just that - BUSINESS experience.”

A lot of people just don’t get that. I know quite a few businessmen with net worths in Mitt’s range, a lot of them I wouldn’t trust with the elected position of dogcatcher. If business acumen were the be all and end all, we’d be voting for Warren Buffet or Bill Gates, who are both liberal toadies. Heck, we’d be voting for Teresa Heinz Kerry.

Of course.

Here on Free Republic, hit pieces are only hit pieces if they are about Fred. And those of course are just the proof that the MSM FEARS THE FRED, all other hit pieces are true.

Now get with the program!

Bingo. I think he's a little too slick for people. I see something Clintonesque about him. Just a trace. It doesn't mean I wouldn't vote for him over Hillary, but it doesn't surprise me that he's not doing as well as he thinks he ought to be doing.

Correction: Hit pieces at Free Republic are only hit pieces if they attack conservative candidates.

Same for me, only adding that Rudy was erased from my list entirely.

btw, Teresa does not have business experience. She married a successful republican and got her money that way.

I don’t think anybody has said that Mitt would be a good president because he was a successfull businessman and created a business empire. As said many times, he was a governor and saviour of 02 Olympics.

The problem with Fred is that he has zero executive experience, and president is hardly an entry level position. Reagan was a successul governor and that made him a great candidate. Only Mitt and Rudy have decent executive experience in leadership positions. It is unfortunate that Allen destroyed himself.

Or Jr!

Meanwhile, I agree with those that feel there isn’t a perfect candidate in the GOP field, not sure why, but Romney would be a lot better than any democrat. I’d line up to vote for him.

The MSM is licking their chops for a Rudy v. Hilly fight. they fiigure it will sell more papers, more commercials, etc.

If Mitt or fred want the nomination they are going to have to work overtime to get their names out as the msm isn’t going to help them.

1. The MSM and DBM is pulling for Guiliani PERIOD.

The want a NYC liberal vs NYC liberal race PERIOD.

2. They like other people more.

3. His potential is being split with the lesser candidats like brownback, huckabee, and ronpaul etc. Even McCain is a waste of time in this election.
