One can never be sure what goes on and is never made public. For all we know, there could be deals for the Russians to continue to set up gas stations across the USA, and look the other way if the US/Israeli forces where to finally commit to taking out the Iranians's nuclear facilities, with a promise not to cripple Iranian oil/gas facilities so that the Russians can later on still get in on the pipelines.
Pottie could give a hoot about how the Mullahs feel about things. They are simply a puppet for the Russians to regain a stronger position in their part of the world.
Besides. The Russians need some souther warm water ports. One never knows for sure what goes on behind closed doors.
