Thanks for the info.

Regarding Ann Uccelo, was it the governorship that she would have surely won in 1970 had they not forced her to defer to a RINO and run a suicide mission in the Hartford-based 1st?

Either the Governorship or the Senate seat she could’ve had at (I think the concern in those days was running women for prominent offices — in 1970, the Republicans had only 1 woman above the House level, and that was the aging and out-of-touch Sen. Margaret Chase Smith in ME). To my knowledge, the Republican we put up for Governor was a fairly good guy, Congressman Tom Meskill (I think some consider him to be the last great Governor of CT).

The odious freshman Congressman Weicker was the GOP nominee against Sen. Tom Dodd (who, like Lieberman, was dumped by the regular Dems) and the nominated Dem in a 3-way race. Had Uccello been the nominee in either race, she would’ve prevailed in my estimation. As it was, her “suicide mission” in the 1st came within only 1,000 votes of her winning. Had she won that, she would’ve been in an excellent position to run for Governor... but... the Watergate fiasco would’ve brought that to a halt. The Dem Ella Grasso won Meskill’s open House seat in ‘70 and his open seat for Governor in ‘74, and she, and not Uccello, became the first woman Governor of CT (facing off against another GOP Congressman, Bob Steele, winning 58-40%). I guess if I could’ve chosen the candidates in ‘70, I would’ve had her run for Governor and Meskill for the Senate. Too bad there’s never any do-overs... :-\
