Romney gets some help from Bob Jones University
The CarpetBagger Report.com ^ | October 16, 2007 | Steve Benen

As recently as 2000, Bob Jones III wrote an open letter that referred to both Catholicism and Mormonism as “cults which call themselves Christian.” And yet, seven years later, a top official at the conservative, fundamentalist Bob Jones University is throwing his political support to Mormon presidential hopeful Mitt Romney.

Robert R. Taylor, dean of the university’s college of arts and sciences, said he believes the former Massachusetts governor is the only Republican candidate who both stands a chance of winning the White House and will reliably implement the anti-abortion, antigay marriage, pro-gun agenda of Christian conservatives.

“The fact that I’m seen as a Religious Right person would hopefully get others to step out for him,” Taylor said in an interview in Greenville, S.C., the university’s hometown.

Taylor’s endorsement, which he said he plans to announce in the near future, marks a stunning move for such a high-placed academic at Bob Jones University…. Taylor acknowledged that endorsing a Mormon for president risked alienating the university’s conservative donors and alumni. But, he said, “we’re not electing a pastor — we’re electing a president.”

It gets back to a point I argued last week: slowly but surely, the religious right is coalescing around Romney. At the start of the year, this seemed highly unlikely — Christian conservatives simply wouldn’t be able to get over their theological differences with the former Massachusetts governor.

Robert Taylor may be looking for a job tomorrow. BJU doesn’t tolerate dissenters very well.

Christians aren’t going to fall for that fraud.

Well, aside from the ones who’ve fallen for televangelist frauds. You can surely fool some of the people some of the time.

Didn't Bob Jones croak? That may have something to do with it.

I visited the campus in 1971. They had what looked like a giant furniture store called the "dating parlor". If you wanted to charm a lass, you'd take her to the DP, and sit and talk while the chaperones walked around making sure no one was getting too close or touching or anything.

LOL - I remember someone there telling me if that making out was called "going to town", since that's what they had to do if they wanted to.

The thing about Mitt Romney is that his values appear to line up with “Average Christian” values.

So far, no one else has even bothered to approach the Christian Community, Rudy...err...McCain...Abortion...Thompson..?

Maybe, but Fred is not quite reaching out.

That leaves Mitt.

Don’t care (even if my own Alma Mater Liberty University) endorsed him; I’d never vote for Mitt. And I don’t think L.U. is going to do that now,..

At the start of the year, this seemed highly unlikely — Christian conservatives simply wouldn’t be able to get over their theological differences with the former Massachusetts governor. But the circumstances have changed. Rudy Giuliani is a threat the religious right movement, Fred Thompson is too weak, John McCain is too untrustworthy, and Mike Huckabee and Sam Brownback aren’t competitive enough.

With Mitt adding up the endorsements, his opponents (and some freepers) are sure to get even more shrill and desperate in their rhetoric.

Oh yeah, when I think midwestern Christian, I think megamillionaire slick-talking draft-avoiding gay rights-endorsing pro-abortion my-___-doesn't-smell phony.

Once again, Mitt Romney is not runnning for Pastor of the United States. Doctrinal and theological differences aside, does he have values which closely match yours? Does he have what it takes to win the election and to lead the nation? Would he lead the nation in a direction that is closer to where you want to be than another would?

Those are the questions that matter.

Oh great, combined with Bill Schneider’s determination that Fred Thompson is done, Hugh Hewitt is going to wet himself over this one ranting it is now between Rudy and Romney, again...

“who both stands a chance of winning the White House and will reliably implement the anti-abortion, antigay marriage, pro-gun agenda of Christian conservatives”

Huh?? How does this dimwit ( Taylor) get anti-gay marriage out of...Romney being the Governor of the state that invented it?

How does he get pro-gun out of...Romney to this very date( see 2nd debate) supports the AWB?

Christians like me are lining up behind Romney en masse because he shares the same values and morals that we cherish.

But what do I know...I’m just one of those other cult members (a.k.a. “Catholic”)? :eyeroll:

“That leaves Mitt.”

Well, when Mitt confesses that he is on the path to becoming God and will have a planet with infinite spirit children, then we’ll see how far his outreach to Christians goes.

I am convinced more than ever now that Romney is the man to beat Hillary. He’s conservative, he’s smart, and he’s got the executive and economic experience that the other candidates lack.

GO MITT!!

You mean those good old Christian values of ostracising and shunning malcontents (like those who revert to traditional Christianity). Yup, what do you know is right.

Remember, Joseph Smith AND Harry Reid consider you a religious abomination.

“Once again, Mitt Romney is not runnning for Pastor of the United States.”

That’s because he’s a Bishop and Stakehold President, not a Pastor. And if you don’t think he is being pushed by the Mormon church, then you are gullible enough to believe seer stones, reformed Egyptian, and Gold plates left near Palmyra New York that were given by the angel Moroni and are about the Jews who colonized America in 600BC.
