I wish people would stop the illiteracy of putting a u after the q in transliterated Arabic words. If folks can’t stand a q without a u, they could transliterate the gutteral k sound from Arabic as kh. The first consonant in the Arabic word for ‘base’ sounds like briefly clearing your throat, not like the first sound in quick.

Thanks, Dave, for cluing us in about the Arabic q. I have wondered about that. Such inaccuracies are like fingernails scraping on the blackboard.

But I have a qestion: Is Arabic never to be transliterated with a u after the q?

The qest of inqiring minds for truth is unqenchable.
