O'Malley's gay-union view set by audience

ANNAPOLIS — Gov. Martin O"Malley has struggled to find a consistent position on homosexual "marriage" in the weeks since Maryland"s highest court upheld a ban on the unions and left further action on the issue to the General Assembly.

Mr. O"Malley, a Democrat, seemed to support civil unions last week, although his stance has shifted depending on who he is talking to.

"I believe civil unions is an idea around which we can forge a consensus," Mr. O"Malley said during a Thursday appearance on the "Kojo Nnamdi Show" on WAMU-FM (88.5 FM). Mr. O"Malley went on to acknowledge that some people were "disappointed that I don"t use the word 'marriage."

But a week earlier, in an Oct. 5 interview with the Washington Blade, Mr. O"Malley was quoted as saying he would be open to signing a bill extending marriage rights to homosexuals, as long as it contained a provision exempting religious institutions.

"Without infringing on anyone"s faith, that would be a law I should sign," Mr. O"Malley told the paper, which is aimed at the D.C. area"s homosexual community.

Mr. O"Malley"s comments to the Blade were made in the wake of a Sept. 18 statement that the governor issued after the court returned its ruling, overturning a lower-court decision that would have allowed homosexuals to "marry" and upholding a 1973 state law limiting marriage to between one man and one woman.

Mr. O"Malley"s statement said, "Those of us with the responsibility of passing and enforcing laws have an obligation to protect the rights of all individuals equally, without telling any faith how to define its sacraments.

"I respect the court"s decision," he said.

The Democrats know people are opposed to gay marriage. No matter how they try, they can't sell it to the public since the courts failed to impose it for them.

I concur— Same Sex Marriage is Wrong— Civil Unions are
Fraud. Government /legislators who advance or promote the
deciet of the homosexual lifestyle choice are anti-Christian and invalid... unfit to hold public office.
The bit about telling religion how to administer their
sacraments (however he put it) is the apostate infidel
raising his fist in the face of those who serve the church
he considers his sunday morning social club?(If I read it right.)

Oh, his stance has shifted all right. Some days it's normal, other days it's wide. Now the Demopanderer has to put up or shut up.
