“Jesus’ teachings, his sacrifice and the salvation he offers are, by any measure, the fulfillment of the Jewish faith. Christians understand that they and Jews are one in the Spirit, brothers and sisters in mutual love for the Father. The Messiah is, after all, Jewish.”
I think that this quote from you post captured the actual intent of Coulter’s remarks and that’s why she refused to back down or soften her words.
From a historical perspective, not only is Christianity derived from Judiasm, but the earliest Christians actually considered themselves a Jewish sect. The Apostles always were Jews, and Christ was their Rabbi. Now, fifteen percent of the population of the Roman Empire was Jewish at that time. So it’s not difficult to imagine that the early “converts” to Christianity that came from this group probably saw themselves as following a different Rabbi.
The Christians gradually ceased to identify entirely with “other Jews” as Christianity spread people of pagan origin and eventually because of the anti-semitism arising out of the idea that “the Jews killed Jesus”.
Thanks for your appreciation. Coulter is rarely wrong. She made clear in that same interview that speaking the truth as she earnestly believes without apology is what drives Marxists insane. Her interviewer demonstrated the point vividly by taking offense at her clearly stated and completely appropriate expression of her faith.
I understand that Mark was written (in Greek! not Aramaic or Hebrew) as an aid to the Romans to distinguish Christians from the Jews. Jews were in revolt, and were being exiled or killed. I can understand why one would perhaps emphasized ones distinguishing marks, so as not want to be treated as the Romans treated the Jews.
