This weekend I'm saluting one of the most gifted and under-rated songwriters on the American landscape. He’s often compared favorably to Kris Kristofferson, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Van Morrison and Bruce Springsteen, and while he matches or exceeds them all in prolificacy, perseverance and quality, his name still goes unrecognized by the general public more often than even more obscure performers. John Prine is quite simply a performer’s performer. There are few stars in Nashville, New York or California who do not admire his vast body of work and in some way, owe him a debt for influences and creativity passed on. An example is Kris Kristofferson’s well known song, “Jesus Was A Capricorn”, which is obscurely subtitled “(Owed To John Prine)” because Kristofferson, who "discovered" Prine in a Chicago coffee house in 1970 (after hearing about him from Paul Anka), borrowed the Capricorn melody from Prine's "Grandpa Was a Carpenter".

John Prine has been classified a folksinger, a country artist and a pop star. He’s shared the spotlight with artists as diverse as Chet Atkins, The Chieftains, Hank Williams, Jr., Tom Petty, Bonnie Rait, John Hiatt, Patty Loveless, Bruce Springsteen, Lucinda Williams, Willie Nelson, Steve Earle and The Cowboy Junkies just to name a few. Hailed as "The New Dylan" when he first burst on the scene in 1971, Bob Dylan himself showed up unannounced at one of Prine's first New York City club appearances, anonymously backing him up on harmonica. John has occasionally partnered with the late Steve Goodman, Iris DeMent, Ramblin’ Jack Elliot and Nanci Griffith. His songs have often produced hits for others including “Please Don’t Bury Me (Down In The Cold Cold Ground)”, “Souvenirs”, "Sam Stone", "Crazy As A Loon" and “Angel From Montgomery”.

Prine’s storytelling style is unique. He injects humor into the most tragic and serious of situations, often cynical and frequently self-deprecating, but always in a good-natured, home-spun approach that endears his gravely and sometimes nasal voice to his listener. Other times Prine is downright silly, playing word-games that are both clever and charming, but he's as at home writing touching love ballads or singing Acapella Gospel. A John Prine concert leaves you with the same feeling as an evening with a gifted comedian and a master song craftsman. His 40 year music career got started after a tour of military service in the Army and a stint as a postman. Since then, he's never looked back and at age 61 he still maintains an aggressive touring, recording and public appearance schedule.

Born October 10, 1946, in Maywood, Illinois, John began playing guitar at age fourteen, influenced, encouraged and mentored by his grandfather who played guitar with Merle Travis. In 1998, John was sidelined by throat cancer and underwent successful surgery and radiation therapy. In 2003 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award for songwriting by BBC Radio and was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame the same year. In 2005 at the Americana Music Awards he was honored with the Artist of the Year award. He's won multiple Grammy Awards, the most recent in 2006 for Best Contemporary Folk Album and he's acted in major motion pictures including, "Falling from Grace" in 1992 directed by John Mellencamp and long-time friend Billy Bob Thornton's "Them and Daddy" in 2001. His latest Album is a collaboration with 82 year-old Bluegrass legend Mac Wiseman called, "Standard Songs for Average People".

Happy Birthday Johnny

Lake Marie (Standing By Peaceful Waters)
~ John Prine ~

Lake Marie

We were standing
Standing by peaceful waters
Standing by peaceful waters
Whoa Wah Oh Wha Oh

Many years ago along the Illinois-Wisconsin Border
There was this Indian tribe
They found two babies in the woods
White babies
One of them was named Elizabeth
She was the fairer of the two
While the smaller and more fragile one was named Marie
Having never seen white girls before
And living on the two lakes known as the Twin Lakes
They named the larger and more beautiful lake, Lake Elizabeth
And thus the smaller lake that was hidden from the highway
Became known forever as Lake Marie

We were standing
Standing by peaceful waters
Standing by peaceful waters
Whoa Wah Oh Wha Oh

Many years later I found myself talking to this girl
Who was standing there with her back turned to Lake Marie
The wind was blowing especially through her hair
There was four Italian sausages cooking on the outdoor grill
And Man, they was ssssssssizzlin'
Many years later we found ourselves in Canada
Trying to save our marriage and perhaps catch a few fish
Whatever came first
That night she fell asleep in my arms
Humming the tune to 'Louie Louie'
Aah baby, We gotta go now.

We were standing
Standing by peaceful waters
Standing by peaceful waters
Whoa Wah Oh Wha Oh
Whoa Wah Oh Wha Oh

The dogs were barking as the cars were parking
The loan sharks were sharking the narcs were narcing
Practically everyone was there
In the parking lot by the forest preserve
The police had found two bodies
Nay, naked bodies
Their faces had been horribly disfigured by some sharp object
Saw it on the news
On the TV news
In a black and white video
You know what blood looks like in a black and white video?
Shadows, Shadows
That's what it looks like
All the love we shared between her and me was slammed
Slammed up against the banks of old Lake Marie
Marie
We were standing
Standing by peaceful waters
Standing by peaceful waters
Whoa Wah Oh Wha Oh
Whoa Wah Oh Wha Oh
Whoa Wah Oh Wha Oh

Peaceful waters
Standing by peaceful waters
Ahh baby, we gotta go now
