I had the impression that the charge sought was too much for the circumstances and assume the jury didn’t have the choice to opt for a lesser charge. Is that what happened here, the prosecution aimed too high?

I don’t think the prosecutor wanted a conviction of any sort. If he did, why did he put on a medical expert that undermined the prosecution argument?
