Republican sources confirmed Thursday that 18-term Rep. Ralph Regula (R-Ohio) will announce his retirement imminently, perhaps as soon as Friday. A Regula spokesman would not confirm the retirement announcement.
*ping*
Regula is getting up there, so this isn’t unexpected. 36 years is a long run.
What kind of district is this?
Heavily Republican. No worries.
At this rate 50% of the current GOP senators will retire by election day 08! They seem determined that we remain awash in a sea of liberalism next year...
Looks like that district is up by Toledo, which I’m thinking is more liberal - the Toledo Blade (their newspaper) is very left-friendly.
But then again, it’s Ohio - sometimes it’s difficult to say from district to district. Regula was a moderate, though - don’t know if that says anything about the district, either.
I spent 3 weeks last May in Ashland, which is part of this district, and it is indeed a very Republican area. I felt somewhat out of place there though.
That district hasn't elected a rodent since 1948. Regula was starting to decline in his performances solely because of age concerns.
How come ?
Its no fun being in the minority again for these House veterans. they lost the will to fight. At least long time incumbents from Blue Districts are stepping aside to make room for the younger generation of conservatives. Now if only Bohener would retire.
Not implying anything about this Rep but I wonder how many of these retirements are because of potential dark clouds in the closet.
Either that or they think the ship is sinking.
I don't necessarily think that's the case with Regula. He's well into his 80s and I don't think he wants to be carried out feet-first. He's already established a record for being the longest serving member in Congress in Ohio history (breaking the previous record of Republican Tom Jenkins, who served 34 years from 1925-59) with 36 years, so from his standpoint, he's going out while on top.
It’s a rather rural small town, so I stood out more than most.
What on earth did you go dressed as, dude ?
LOL, my normal self. People in those small towns are usually suspicious of ‘outsiders’, and often with good reason, too.
Do they think you’re gonna kidnap their daughters ?
Hope not, I always try not to attact any negative attention.
This district covers an interesting region, the string of cities from Ashland to Alliance is like a high-water mark between the Appalachian northward influence and the southern edge of the Lakeshore industrial northern European ethnic migration. I’ve worked in most of these cities and can hardly figure the people out! Still, the balance has been to the GOP and there’s not much movement to suggest that will change. Here is a goldem opportunity for an up-and-coming GOP starlet to set himself up for the long run...if Allan Keyes had found a district like this twenty years ago he would be a senior power in the House by now or even a senator, and his presidential ambitions would have legs instead of wishful clouds of smoke around his head.
Well that’s not very sporting.
