I agree that Ann knows exactly what she's doing, however I don't think the media is being calculating. They're repeating her comments. Which were offensive, my guess intentionally, and which I doubt she believes, but which will garner publicity for her and her book.
My point earlier, and during the faggot controversy, was that the Republican Party should distance themselves from her. She's not an asset.
