Ontarians have renewed their faith in Premier Dalton McGuinty's Liberals.
Forgiving his broken promise not to raise taxes shortly after he took office in 2003, voters yesterday handed him the first back-to-back Liberal majority government since Mitch Hepburn won 70 years ago.

As predicted by yours truly, Ontario Progressive Conservative Party leader John Tory, like the hapless Kim Campbell, whose federal campaign he managed in 1993 to a historic wipeout, in 2007, lost his Don Valley West riding and brought the Ontario PC's to their worst ever defeat. The Ontario Liberals won their first back to back provincial majority in 70 years.

I’m confused..can anything other than a liberal (by any name) hope to get elected in Ontario?

Both parties of the Left... the Libs and Dippers pulled in 60% of the vote between them so it was a leftist landslide. The PC's received 25%. In 2003, they received 32%. So it seems Ontario is a Liberal stronghold. They used to split votes on the federal and provincial levels but those days are gone, I suspect. This election saw less than 50% voter turnout because the Liberal victory was a foregone conclusion. Running to the Left did not help the PC's and some conservative voters either cast protest votes for the Greens or voted Liberal but most stayed home. Why vote for a pretend liberal party when you can vote for the real one? Better a real Liberal majority under McGuinty than a pretend liberal government under Tory.

For you Americans:
Turnout was only 50%. Mostly conservatives stayed home (like US 2006). They had no one to vote FOR.
Liberal (like Democrats) and NDP voters are very proactive.
They all turned out. That indicates that conservatives who have something to vote for would be the majority.
That’s what happened in Ontario with Mike Harris, Congress with the Contract for America (1994), and the Reagan landslide.

Any chance that the Ontario provincial Tories will reorganize along the lines of the federal party ? It’s amazing there is such a whopping disconnect between what’s going on at the two levels.

No they won't. They didn't learn from Red Tory Ernie Eaves' defeat in 2003 and they won't learn from Red Tory John Tory's loss in 2007. The Progressive Conservatives are dominated by Red Tory liberals. No true conservative in his right mind in Ontario will vote for them. As long as they have leaders who propose carbon copy policies implemented by the Ontario Liberal Party, Ontarians will continue to vote Liberal.

Just stuck on stupid. Any way to bypass these morons and form another party entirely ? That seemed to be the only way to finally get rid of the PC at the federal level.

Conservatives are looking into reconstituting the Reform Party as an Ontario only party. I think the province needs a genuine conservative alternative, not just two liberal parties.

Sounds like a good idea, anything to demolish the PC or at least get it released from the deathgrip of the left. We’ve all seen what happens in states where the left controls both parties (*cough*Massachusetts*cough*), the GOP shrivels or dies.

Yep. The Ontario PCP is dying because its leadership ignores the base and tries outdo the Left on policy. Its only seen its share of the vote nosedive.

If Ontario wants to elect a lying scumbag like McGuinty, well, they get exactly what they deserve.

There's one bright spot on the horizon: next month the Saskatchewan Party may finally win the general election. The New Democrats are worn and tired after a decade in power. Yes, its a conservative party.

The same way our RINOs have been doomed by pandering to the Left like the Democrats. It never works.
