"people arrested abroad should have access to their home country's consular officials."

They can have access to whoever they want. All they have to do is use their phone call to call the embassy, or have their public defender contact the embassy.

Just because we didn't remind them to call their embassy is no reason to assume we took their rights to do so.

If they give these convicts a new hearing, then they should also yank the licenses of the lawyers for incompetence at worst, or not revealing a conflict of interest, that is, the foreign country may have hired another lawyer.
