Correction, the Republicans are the 60s Democrats. The Democrats now are the socialist party.

-No one is "forced" to participate in Medicare. When a person has received Social Security or Social Security Disability for 2 years, they then have the *option* to receive Medicare. If you don't want it, you can opt out.

--No one is prevented from supplementing their Medicare coverage with other insurance. You just have to indicate whether Medicare or the supplemental coverage is to be your primary payer.

People must fund medicare, or break the law. The law forces them to "participate" in funding Medicare, even if they can forgo the benefits.

That said, disgr's #19 brings up an important point. Under proposed legislation, will seniors really break the law if they buy supplemental insurance? The article doesn't document that claim.

Crying wolf?

As far as I can tell from Medicare.gov, supplemental insurance is not only OK, but promoted on the Medicare website.

Thanks. From your link:

Insurance companies can only sell you a “standardized” Medigap policy. These Medigap policies must all have specific benefits so you can compare them easily.

You may be able to choose up to 12 different standardized Medigap policies (Medigap Plans A through L). Medigap policies must follow Federal and State laws. These laws protect you. A Medigap policy must be clearly identified on the cover as “Medicare Supplement Insurance.” Each plan, A through L, has a different set of basic and extra benefits.

It’s important to compare Medigap policies because costs can vary. The benefits in any Medigap Plan A through L are the same for any insurance company. Each insurance company decides which Medigap policies it wants to sell.

Highly "socialized" private insurance. Some choice, though.

I'd like to scrap all these Medicare programs. Adults in a free republic, those fit to vote, can take care of themselves.

Yes; it appears the article was at least misinformed, if not deceptive. I have to say, though, I have a hard time reading pieces from “Life News” or “Lifesite News” or whatever it’s called. The few pieces I’ve read are so full of spin and buzz words that a dummy like me can’t tell what they are talking about! :^)

Despite the concerns, Democrats, and some Republicans, in the Senate appear ready to propose cuts in the private Medicare Advantage program

We have the Medicare Advantage plan but we've never used it. We just don't go to the doctor or hospital but that doesn't mean we won't sometime. I'd like a clarification on this as well.

I meant what passes for a social conservative these days would have been more in line with the democrat party of the 60’s. Essentially big government liberalism has completely infiltrated the Republican party.

Medicare Advantage is the managed care version of Medicare. The other version is your typical claims-submission-based system. I could be wrong, but it is my understanding that the only way to suppliment managed care services is to have another insurance covering copays or services not covered by Medicare. Are we talking about supplimenting services not covered at all by the managed care plans?
