XeniaSt has it right. It was Turkish Muslims wiping out the Armenian Christians. The country affiliation is incidental. Remember that Northern Africa used to be Christian. After the Arabs/Muslims came in they converted/killed all the Christians. It is happening still today throughout the world (Indonesia for example).
