I lived on the Big Island and Oahu,
visiting Kauai many times by ferry in the mid fifties
as my father was stationed there.

There were less than ten percent Hawaiians.
Lots of Japanese, Chinese, Filipinos, Portuguese and a third Haole.

I just looked at year 2000 demographics and it has not changed much.
