Rudy Giuliani Falls to Fourth in Iowa, Pro-Abortion Stance Upsets 75%

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A new poll sponsored by the Des Moines Register newspaper finds former mayor Rudy Giuliani falling to fourth in the first presidential battleground. Additional questions of likely caucus-goers by the newspaper finds 75 percent of Republicans are turned off by his pro-abortion stance.

The newspaper surveyed like voters from October 1-3 and released the results Monday.

The survey found former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney well out in front with the backing of 29 percent of GOP voters who say they will likely participate in the caucus.

Another 18 percent support former Sen. Fred Thompson, but the poll shows former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee with the support of 12 percent and Giuliani falling to fourth with only 11 percent.

Part of the reason for Giulaini's drop in the standings in Iowa, which can make or break a presidential campaign, has to do with his pro-abortion views.

Asked for their concerns about voting for a particular candidate, 55 percent of Republican voters in Iowa said the fact that Giuliani "supports abortion rights" is a "major factor" in preventing them for voting for him. Another 20 percent said abortion is a "minor factor."

Drake University professor Dennis Goldford talked with Campaigns and Elections magazine about the numbers.

"[Romney's] Iowa-centric strategy still seems to be going according to plan," he said. "Giuliani hasn't been [in Iowa] much and [support] seems to have softened."

Goldford said Huckabee appears to be the only candidate breaking into the upper echelon from the minor candidates at the bottom of the polls and "if anyone from that second tier is going to emerge...it's Huckabee."

Romney held steady from the last Register poll in May, moving from 30 to 29 percent. Huckabee surged from 4 to 12 percent and Giuliani declined to 11 from 17 in May. Thompson was not included in the may survey because he hadn't declared a bid yet.

Another new Iowa political survey seems to support the Register's results.

An Insider Advantage poll has Romney in front with 24 percent and Giuliani second with just 16 percent of the Iowa vote. Thompson and Huckabee are tied with 13 percent in that poll.

I find it hard to take Hannity seriously when he says he is a conservative.

My idea and his idea of what a conservative is, are not the same.

You cannot say you are pro life one minute and support a pro abortion advocate the next.

Promises at campaign time mean nothing. History does.

Hannity has exposed himself as a total RINO in the past few months.
***********************************
I’ve always felt that way about Hannity ,,, he’s been sucked in by the NYC social/political climate , I’ve seen it happen to many people ,, kinda like what they say about people beginning to look like their pets after a while ,, your surroundings do affect you,, unlike Rush however he doesn’t have enough intellect or strong enough debating skills to make it on his own away from the media center cities.

Iowa means a great deal in terms of momentum. Howard Dean’s lead completely collapsed after Iowa and he lost in New Hampshire which was his neighboring state (granted it was Kerry’s neighboring state, but it’s also Romney’s). Whoever has the momentum after Iowa and New Hampshire nearly always wins the nomination.

Didn’t McCain win NH in 2000?

Yes, but Bush won Iowa. The last person who lost in both Iowa and New Hampshire who won their party’s nomination was McGovern in 1972 (he lost them both to Ed Muskie).

I am tired of so called conservativies saying that we all have to get behind the rep. nomineee regardless of who wins.It is up to us to make sure the winner is a “TRUE” conservative and not a romney come lately.Duncan Hunter comes to my mind.I cant believe we have such crappy people to pick from on the top tier.

Hannity is superficial. Just happens to be a Republican cheerleader.

I agree. There hasn’t been a single vote cast yet. Instead of worrying about “getting behind” someone we need to concentrate on getting a genuine conservative nominated.

Hannity simply cheers for the side he thinks will win, if his show was on BEFORE Rush’s he wouldn’t know what to talk about (I’ve noticed that Hannity’s shows are worse than normal when Rush is on vacation and Hannity can’t steal talking points).

There are a lot of states that Rudy will do well in but flyover Red isn’t the place and neither is the south other then Florida which is really mostly little N.Y. what with all the Yanks moving here.

hahaha. I never listen to his show on the radio. I catch the show on Fox once in awhile.

Both he and Colmes irritate the heck out of me. I would love to shoot that pen out of Hannity’s hand. Is it grafted there?

I don’t know what it is, but neither one of them seems to be a good rep for their cause.

However, many of the retirees in Florida are ‘Rats and won’t vote in the GOP primary. The GOP stronghold in Florida is in the panhandle and they vote like the rest of the south.

Giuliani polls well in the generic polls. But on a state by state basis, he goes down. And when it gets to the polls where they have ballot boxes called primaries pretty much exclusive to flesh and blood Republicans, he will do even worse. In 2000, the MSM kept up the myth that McCain was a true front runner and leading contender. When they got to real ballot boxes in South Carolina the truth was told, although the MSM mythology is that Bush used dirty tricks to rob McCain in South Carolina and the nomination.

My drive home from work takes about an hour and Hannity’s radio show is on, I listen to it until he starts cheering for Rooty Toot (usually about ten minutes) and then turn it off.

It is telling that you are captive in your car when you try to listen.

10 minutes makes you very brave. You are a good American! LOL

Well, I have to go through one of two tunnels to get home and the talk radio channel has the best traffic report which comes on at about 5:06.

How did it come about that the leading contenders are northeast liberals anyway? What happened to the Republican Party?

I think part of the problem is that Bush never put any effort into grooming a successor and George Allen committed political suicide with his “macaca” remark.

The Villages are another real GOP stronghold. Not too sure the Cubans are a block anymore?
