I saw a special on some of the folks that grow these babies, they feed them all kinds of stuff, there’s a science to it, ait lmost seems like a dark art. you become consumed with growing them. ;-)

My great-grandparents grew huge pumpkins for the county fair. They made a slit in the vine of the pumpkin and ran a candle wick from the slit to a bowl of buttermilk and “fed” the pumpkin that way. They would grow them 100 pounds or more.

The biggest we ever grew were nowhere near 100 pounds,, but they sure made good pies and jack’o’lanterns. That’s a good trick with the wick.. ;-)

Winner at this year’s Topsfield Fair (north of Boston)1,689 pounds.

They use forklifts and straps handle with care,, they use straps and lifts to move them,, get them on a pallet and forklift them to a big truck and drive very carefully.
Imagine losing one of them puppies on the freeway.. :-}
