Bush: All religions pray to 'same God'

President George Bush has repeated his belief all religions, "whether they be Muslim, Christian, or any other religion, prays to the same God" – an assertion that caused outrage among evangelical leaders when he said it in November 2003.

“Ah, last time I checked, Jesus isn’t God.”

I have to disagree because there is so much from the Bible that proves He is God.

I hope you will look over the scriptures below and come to understand that what you believe does not line up with what the Bible teaches.

DAVID CALLED HIM GOD

“Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The son of David. He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool? If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?” (Matt. 22:42-45).

ISAIAH CALLED HIM GOD

“Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14).

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).

JEREMIAH CALLED HIM GOD

“Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS” (Jeremiah 23:5-6).

MATTHEW CALLED HIM GOD

“Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us” (Matthew 1:23).

CHRIST CALLED HIMSELF GOD

“But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work. Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God” (John 5:17-18).

“Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by” (John 8:58-59).

“I and my Father are one. Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him. Jesus answered them, Many good works have I showed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me? The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God” (John 10:30-33).

“I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty” (Revelation 1:8).

CHRIST ACCEPTED WORSHIP AS GOD

“And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean” (Matthew 8:2).

“While he spake these things unto them, behold, there came a certain ruler, and worshipped him, saying, My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live” (Matthew 9:18).

“Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God” (Matthew 14:33).

“Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me” (Matthew 15:25).

“Then came to him the mother of Zebedee’s children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him” (Matthew 20:20).

“And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him” (Matthew 28:9).

“And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him” (John 9:38).

“That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth” (Philippians 2:10).

Unlike the elect angels and the apostles who refused to accept worship (Acts 14:11-15; Rev. 19:10), not once did Jesus refuse it. The Bible teaches that it is idolatry and wickedness to worship any one or any thing other than the one True and Living God (Ex. 20:3-5; 34:14; Is. 42:8; Matt. 4:10). Therefore, the fact that Jesus Christ accepted worship is indisputable evidence that he is Almighty God.

THE ANGELS CALLED HIM GOD

“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11).

THE BLIND MAN CALLED HIM GOD

“Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God? He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him? And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee. And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him” (John 9:35-38).

THOMAS CALLED HIM GOD

“And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God” (John 20:28).

PETER CALLED HIM GOD

“Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him. The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all)” (Acts 10:34-36).

JOHN CALLED HIM GOD

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1).

“Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren” (1 John 3:16).

“And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life” (1 John 5:18).

PAUL CALLED HIM GOD

“Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood” (Acts 20:28).

“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God” (Philippians 2:5-6).

“Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.” (Col. 1:15-17).

“And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory” (1 Timothy 3:16).

“Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13).

GOD THE FATHER CALLED HIM GOD

“But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows” (Hebrews 1:8-9).

Hebrews 1:8-9 is quoted from Psalm 45, and in Psalm 45 it is obvious that God the Father, Jehovah God, is speaking about the Son. God the Father calls the Son God, and God the Son calls the Father God. This is the mystery of the Trinity. Though we do not fully understand it, we believe it because it is the teaching of the Scriptures.

Outstanding point.

BTW, I don’t expect him to be our pastor or pope, but do wish we are on the same track, united in remaining in fatih through Christ in all things, never denying Him.

You are most assuredly Catholic.

Yours is a stance I find little in common with (though it does make for cooler movies about the Apocalypse and demons...)

Oh well, FRegards anyway.

He sure doesn't sound like a traditional Christian if true.

Jews, Muslims and Christians all worship the God of Abraham. They all just believe different things about Him. . . His attributes, what He requires, and so forth.

So, yes, we all worship the same God. . .sorta.

Care to share what faith you were raised in? (I mean the denomination, sect, whatever you want to call it.)

All religions DO NOT pray to the same God. GW should know better than this. We need to keep praying for our President.

Jesus Christ is the Son of God, King of all kings, and the Lord of all Lords. We must personally decide whether or not to invite Him into our hearts to redeem us, cleanse us, forgive us, change us into His image, and give us the promise of eternal life.

Acts 4:12 “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.”

If you haven’t asked Jesus to come and live in your heart, do it today (Romans 10:9-10).

No, because the God of islam is not the God of the Bible, He was a perverted “moon-god” of the Arabs.

Bush was not correct.

Thanks, Cvengr. It’s just not possible to know whether or not our president actually privately believes otherwise than what he said, and I kinda hope that’s the case because we most assuredly want him to have a true understanding of the Lord.

But he is the president and is entrusted to protect us from those who would delight in our demise. I think this is code for, “We’re fixing to go to war with Iran, and it’s not personal or religious you freaks, but because you just won’t listen about that nuklear thingy....”

Ask a Muslim. They will say they are worshipping the God of their father Abraham. You can believe they are worshipping the moon if you want, but that's not what they believe.

I would agree they don't know Him, as they ascribe characteristics to Him that He does not have, and they believe He expects things that He does not and so on.

That’s funny. My God does not condone nor encourage violence, dismemberment, murder and forced conversion in His name. I can only assume that my God is different (and better) than the false god of Mahomet.

Jorge is quite wrong.

Islam does not mean "peace"--it means "submission". It has nothing to do with "peace".

Christians do NOT pray to a God who demanded the beheading of "infidels", nor do they recognize a psychopath-pedophile-butcher as their prophet.

Nor had Timothy McVeigh ANYTHING to do with Christianity or religion of any kind.

Jorge is as stupid and dangerous in his asinine theology as he is in his slavering obsequiousness to the criminal invasion from the south--with its own oversampling of violent criminal predators.

Great post BigMack. I appreciate the time and effort you spent putting it togeather. This has been an interesting thread and I am encouraged to see such a strong Reformation Theology presence among my fellow freepers. I would hope we remain as strong and vocal in our witness when we are out in the world among the unsaved that we may bring as many to our Lord as possible. I also pray that whatever minor differences we have in Theology we remain united in the essential, simple, message of the Gospel.

“This is classic Billy Grahamism.”

Absolutely. When I heard BG tell an interviewer that Jews are saved and will go to Heaven even though they don’t believe in Jesus, I quit listening. I think that was in the late ‘90s.

Whoa! To both of you who seem to think Jews accept the trinity or should, EXCUUUUUUUUSE ME!

With respect, Jews no more believe in the trinity than they believe that Jesus was the Messiah. You may not have noticed this, but the Church has been rather keen on getting the Jews to change their minds about this for, oh, about 2000 years, with rather limited success.

One of the most profound and revered concepts in all of Judaism is the Oneness of G-d. That is why one of the holiest and most commonly recited prayers is the Shema:

Hear, Oh Israel, the Lord is our G-d, the Lord is One.

It is a rather candid and blunt statement that does not admit of a free interpretation such as: “Well when I said I was One, I really meant one composed of three, or three who are really one”. No, according to Jews, who have died many times over this little disagreement, there is no trinity.

In Christian theology, I suppose, a choice was made to accept some changes introduced through the Gospels or other Christian texts or traditions, that this plain statement in the Jewish Bible should not be taken at face value. Fine. That became a bedrock doctrine of a new religion, which is not Judaism. It is not Jewish in origin and it is a direct contradiction to the fundamentals of Jewish faith.

Again, with respect, you have your beliefs and I respect your strongly held convictions, but please do not go around saying what other folks of other religions believe or should believe. Thank you.
