The Detroit Free Press is reporting that federal prosecutor J.D. Roy Atchison of Gulf Breeze, who was charged last month after allegedly flying to Detroit to have sex with a 5-year-old child, committed suicide today.
The newspaper cited authorities who said Atchison hanged himself this morning at the federal prison in Milan, Mich., where he was taken after previously trying to commit suicide at Sanilac County Jail.
They said the 53-year-old Atchison, who worked in the U.S. attorneys office in Pensacola, had been housed in solitary confinement and was under close supervision, the newspaper reported.
Lawyer James Thomas of Detroit said he planned to ask a federal judge to dismiss the charges against Atchison, the Free Press reported.
Greg Miller, U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Florida, issued the following statement in response to Atchison's suicide: "Our thoughts and prayers are with Roys family and friends. We hope that with the passage of time, they can find some measure of healing."

Aw, come back, Grammy. We all make mistakes. Course, if you’re gonna do it, don’t do it early on the thread or you’ll hear it, and hear it, and hear it. Been there. Still have the whip marks on my tender hide.
I was wondering if he was one of the ones that Bush was trying to fire.
Correct...Assistant Prosecutors are hired, not appointed.
Search for “John David Roy Atchison”, you’ll have to find the census stuff yourself though. Probably best to let this one lie though, the first links are dailykos and wildblue or some other dhim site.
So it happened when the guard had to go take a wizz?
This time, he did the right thing. Can’t say the same for our legal system, which was trying to prevent him from doing the right thing, so that the taxpayers could be forced to house him for the rest of life at a cost of about $1 million, or have him loose on the streets again.
Suicide provisions are almost always limited for two years. After that, they pay out in full. the time period may be different in some states. The reasoning is that a person would not follow through on a plan to commit suicide after two years.
I don’t think there was a child or a family involved, just the police posing as a child.
Just one more liberal prevented from joining the GLBTP alliance of deviants.
Justice served. It was the best way to go. What a scumbag.
I'm sure there were others. These bast*rds are never caught the first time out.
:)
Just curious, what gives you the impression he felt guilty? He actually pleaded not guilty, and he didn't seem to feel so bad about it (mentioned doing it "plenty" of times before) until he was caught. I assume he committed suicide because he knew what was ahead of him - both in the courts, and in prison. It wouldn't be anything pleasant. jmho.He was going to fry. He even had a myspace for his "hobby".
Too close?
So was Herman Goering. He had inside help with his suicide.
While he may have victimized someone somewhere, there were no victims in this case. It was a sting. No other victims have been identified.
“The man would have been a great US Congressman or Senator.”
Ouch! That’s really below the belt. Didn’t we also have a president who tinkered with a young one in the Oval Office?
“had been housed in solitary confinement and was under close supervision, the newspaper reported.”
Obviously, not close enough
Since the article at kcvl's post 11 above says he had been a prosecutor since the late 80s (Reagan or Bush Sr), I'm wondering how you know this, and can you provide a link?
