Israeli raid caused electronic disruption over wide areas of Syria

The lid of secrecy covering the Sept. 6 Israeli air strike into Syria remains tight but one new theory emerging amid the speculation is that the Israeli conducted an electronic warfare exercise in preparation for future strikes or an attack on Iran.

Authoritative reports from the Middle East stated that the Israel operation included extensive electronic warfare jamming by aircraft. The Israeli were testing the capabilities of Russian-made air defenses, including both radar and missiles located near Damascus and south of Homs near the Lebanese northern border.

The raid was unprecedented in the blanket of jamming and electronic disruption that it caused over wide areas of Syria enroute to the target point, a base near the Euphrates River.

The jamming also affected parts of Lebanon and Israel but Syria was able to get a small amount of sensor information from one of its electronic eavesdropping stations and spot the Israeli infiltration.

The raid was part of a U.S. “masint” operation according to this theory, referring to the military practice known as measurement and signature intelligence that is designed to learn the chrematistics and capabilities of all weapons in a region that emanate electronic signals. The masint signatures are needed for targeting and for defeating air defense threats.

The daring raid would gain valuable intelligence needed for future strikes by both Israel and the United States in the region.

The U.S. military is considering attacks on both Syria and Iran to counter infiltration by insurgents and terrorists into Iraq, including the Iranian paramilitaries. Israel could use the data for its battle against Hizbullah and possibly a future strike on Iranian nuclear facilities.

Journalist Jack Wheeler raised this idea in a recent report when he stated that the identity of the target, whether nuclear facilities, missiles or Hizbullah terrorists is “not the story.”

“The primary point of the attack was not to destroy that target,” Wheeler said. “It was to shut down Syria's Russian air defense system during the attack. Doing so made the attack an incredible success. Syria is shamed and silent. Iran is freaking out in panic. Defenseless enemies are fun.”

The reason that digital replaced analog, is because analog was defeated long ago, and has far fewer abilities to process returns.

Throwing rocks does prevent succumbing to having your weapon jam because of dust, but you are still stuck heaving a rock at a guy with a gun.

Reception poor in recent weeks

Excerpt for the above link for those scared of links (lol)...

BEIRUT — Watching television in Lebanon and Israel has become a jarring experience over recent weeks.
Frustrated viewers have inundated their cable and satellite providers complaining that the onscreen images constantly flicker and freeze. Analysts on both sides of the border suspect covert military activity but, like any good Middle Eastern story, theories abound as to who is the culprit.

The onset of the problems coincided with a Sept. 6 Israeli air raid on Syria. Television signals began to deteriorate shortly afterward and on Sept. 12, Lebanon’s Telecommunications Minister Marwan Hamadeh told local daily An Nahar that interference had “started with the aggressive Israeli infiltration on Syria.”

But by Sept. 20, Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, which also linked reception problems to the raid, reported “Syrian espionage activities on northern Israel using Russian experts” as a possible cause of the disruption.

A third theory emerged on Sept. 23 when satellite industry publication Rapid TV News cited reports that strong radar signals were being generated by “various intelligence elements, chiefly Western countries, which are trying to fathom the intentions of Israel and Syria in the near future.”

Israeli and Lebanese cable providers have offered less specific explanations. Israeli satellite operator Yes said reception problems had been caused by “electromagnetic interference not connected to the company.”

Meanwhile cable providers in Lebanon said the disruptions originated from ships patrolling the Eastern Mediterranean.

“Radar systems in the (Mediterranean) Sea have scrambled satellite signals across Lebanon,” said Rola Zantout with Lebanon’s Cablevision, echoing the views of Orbit and Econet, two other providers in Lebanon.

I explained the tanks, tell me what you think:

I haven't been able to fit the Minot nukes into my scenario which is taking this shape: There were possibly 5 targets: those three WMD sites on that map I post occasionally, that site on the Euphrates at the Turkish border, and one in Deir al Zahr. I'm wondering, after the ship stopped in Egypt (to drop off material or pick up scientists?), then landed in Lebanon (ditto?), then unloaded at Tartous, if a Mossad guy wasn't at the dock, helping the unload. He gave a count of items to the IDF, and trucks started taking the items to one or more sites.

Here's where their (and our) assets are warmed up to hit those five? sites. They start flying, 'jamming' (that's the word everybody's using) Syrian air defense, and one plane goes and drops some tanks at the border in Turkey. Turkey calls Syrian intel, tells them something just fell out of the sky, and Syrian Intel, knowing they're under attack, is confused and disorganized.

Then, 10 or so IDF guys disguised as Syrian military show up in a truck, take one of the items claiming they're taking it to that site on the Turkish border, and instead drive over into Turkey to load the item and themselves up on a plane back to Israel.

When they're at the border the Deiz al Zarh facility gets hit, as does that far Northern facility.

It could happen! :)

My thought was the tanks were dropped to let Turkey notify Syria something happened, and the IDF 'took the call' while ferreting whatever they had into Turkey.

This was on

We’re still here.

Well some of you are. But I'll bet there are a lot more support contracts than there were a few years ago. Proportionally that is.

“Tactical EMP device?”

No, an EMP would have fried everything.

It was probably several aircraft running different jammers to cover a broad spectrum, or the Israeli’s have a stand off escort jammer like the long retired EF-111 “Spark-Vark”.

But I bet it’s all those nice gizmos that they have packed into the dorsal spines of their F-16’s though.

The new russian SAM systems that syria bought was supposed to be “jam proof” due to multiple radar frequencies in the deci, centi and millimeter range and a few other things. They’re supposed to be frequency agile enough to defeat stealth technology (at least that’s what the russians claim....Thank you bill clinton for not destroying the wreckage of the F-117 in Yugoslavia and selling the info to the chinese).
