A good source of information on colleges and universities which discusses, among other things, academic freedom and the political climate on campus, is Choosing the Right College 2008-9, available from the Intercollegiate Studies Institute.

I would generally be wary of some schools that make the U.S. News & World Report annual rankings. These have become something of an inside joke among serious academics who watch with amusement as their college presidents attempt to spend their way onto the list most coveted by the educational establishment.

Unfortunately, people use this ranking as the so called
“Bible” of which colleges are the best. I’d say, buyer beware.
