Her lawyer is either an idiot OR a lier. The police DO handcuff EVERYONE they have in custody even when they are ‘emotionally distraught’. I have worked in ER for over 20 years, and EVERY time they have brought someone to the ER in this condition ( drunk ,high, out of control, screaming, yelling , spitting AND resisting) they come in in cuffs, and now with “spit masks” frequently on. Once they get in the ER WE then place them in 4 point leather restraints frequently in order to control them.
This was a tragic accident but MOST of the blame is with the woman who could not control herself, AND HER oh so “concerned” family who let this unstable time bomb fly UNACCOMPANIED across the country.
And there you have it. Either they couldn't care less or they'd given up on her and didn't want to deal with whatever she was bound to dish up on the way to the treatment center, if she really ever entended to get there.
I'm presuming her NY family put her on the airplane and left only after seeing her board. But I have not read this anywhere
So NY family was depending on this "friend" to take her the rest of the way
My take is not to blame her family so much.
It's not uncommon for drunks/addicts to go on one last binge before entering rehab. She was probably nervous as hell about the program and alcoholics turn to alcohol when they are emotionally distraught about anything. Her history of depression just made the situation worse.
I totally believe the suicide angle is the most likely possibility. Here she is, about to enter rehab, and is arrested by airport cops because she got on a binge on the way there and assaulted other people. She was mortified (in the classic sense of the word) by what people would think and couldn't face it.
cuffs is not the question....the question is how a youngish woman is DEAD after being in police custody.....how often does that happen in your ER?.....I'll bet nobody is left with restraints alone in a room, and if you do, you are violating commonly accepted safeguards when it comes to restraints...
Sometimes people seek care far away to get the best available care, other times it is to get the embarassment out of sight of the locals...
