Myanmar military officer defects to Thailand

Agence France-Presse

BANGKOK (AFP) - A Myanmar military officer has fled to Thailand to seek asylum, apparently because he refused orders to attack Buddhist monks in anti-junta protests, a senior Thai intelligence official said Wednesday.

Major Hla Win entered Thailand with help from a non-government organization, and he hopes to apply for asylum in Norway, the official told AFP.

"He is not a senior general, but is mid-ranking," the official said.

Hla Win's defection is the first known case of a military official fleeing the country since the junta last week ordered a crackdown on anti-government protests.

The Thai official could not say why Hla Win had fled, but Myanmar watchers said they believed he had refused orders to open fire on Buddhist monks who last week last 100,000 people into the streets of Yangon.

At least 13 people were killed and 1,000 arrested in a bloody crackdown on protesters in Yangon.

The protests erupted in mid-August after a hike in the price of fuel, but escalated into the biggest threat to the regime in 20 years when Buddhist monks emerged to lead the movement.

I’m surprised how little liberal response there has been on this. Buddhists massacred for having a non-violent protest for peace and freedom. This is what liberals “pray” everyone will do to solve all the worlds problems.
Not only do they not condemn the hail of bullets, they won’t even repeat the example on our streets in solidarity for their like minded (peaceful) intentions!

Yup. It’s tough to condemn a socialist when you’re trying to elect a Marxist.

However ,what was needed was thousands of young common Burmese
soldiers to turn on their commanders. That would have done , even a singe regiment refusing to beat & kill the monks.
However they turned out to be a bunch of sheep.
Killer sheep....why am I not surprised

Americans ! cherish your 2nd Amendment rights!

I know, I know. At least one did. And a general too if low level.

A lot of these soldiers have been killing, raping and pillaging for a while now so (1) they don't want to give up the 'perks' and (2) if they did turn on the junta that might not be enough to save their hides when the people they've been stomping on are no longer restrained.

There are a few errors in this story I have been hearing aboutCOLONEL HLA WIN since Monday, he was not just a medium ranking officer, he was head of intelligence in the northern Rangoon area. There was finally a story about him in the Bangkok Post today. I did hear unconfirmed reports that one brigade in Mandalay did step in to protect the civs, and their comander was arrested, and another Brigade commander also, I believe the 66th and 99th Light Infantry Brigades, respectively.

The blatant silence by liberals everywhere is just more evidence that they aren't really peace activists, they're just anti-democracy, against any religion that doesn't threaten to riot and kill them, and lazy.

At least you would have expected "Gerbil Boy" to speak out on this.

Check the investments in the trust funds their hard-working forbearors
left to them.

My guess is at least one of their stocks depend on some low-price
commodity being shipped from Myanmar/Burma...forestry products?
Maybe some sort of mining or other resource exploration/exploitation?

Good. That is just the kind of news the junta doesn't want to get out. There are fractures in the ranks. Undoubtedly there are many among the brigades who do follow orders that aren't happy about what they're doing.

These tyrannical regimes do their best to project unity and happiness to the world but there are always sub-surface fractures that they can't control and continue to grow. China is a perfect example of that. They put out the perception to the world that they are one big happy commune but the instability there is actually monumental.

It's simple.

Buddhists are people of faith (OTM*).

People of faith(OTM*) are evil and as such they deserve to die.

The monkeys of Myanmar are simply following the liberal/socialist/communist play book.
