I know several families whose grandparents are illegal...

If I am missing something here other than “I hate Mexicans”, please let me know.

Every American family I know works hard for their money and don't want to be saddled as the welfare department for the Mexican government's failures.

If I am missing something here other than Mexico wanting to pick our pockets, please let me know.

And that was my point. We don’t want failures either, we want successes. And if they’re already here, and successful, it is foolish to kick them out. If they are losers, I have no problem with sending them back to Mexico.

Which goes back to what I said. If you see all Mexicans in the US as losers, it is not the Mexicans that are the problem. But over and over again, I read comments by posters who seem to think that all Mexicans are the problem, which is why they advocate simple, easy to understand, wrong and cruel answers.

Over and over again, they harp on the same wrong ideas:

1) “Non-citizen Mexicans in the US are ‘criminals’.” No, they are not, and I have explained why. If they commit other crimes, they they *are* criminals. But entry is a minor misdemeanor and residency is a civil offense.

2) “If they want to become citizens, they should do it the proper way.” Leaving the US and all their assets here behind, splitting up their families, and waiting 10 or 20 years to *maybe* get citizenship is unreasonable for *anyone*. And yes, it *is* different for those who have never been here, though they shouldn’t have to wait that long either. Either let them in quickly, or not at all. If they are already here, and acting like good citizens, they should be able to stay here and become citizens.

3) “They are a drain on our resources.” No. *Some* of them are a drain on our resources. The rest of them *add* to our resources, including paying all the taxes they *can* pay. Those who *should* stay should also pay their back taxes they couldn’t pay before.

4) “They take away jobs from Americans.” No. Employers who *illegally* employ them do that, and in the process *steal* from both the Mexicans and the US people. Even that is not crystal clear, because some US employers *do* treat their Mexican employees fairly, and will hire Americans to do the same job at the same wage.

There is no reason the US cannot have high standards for its new citizens. We can demand they be employed, that they speak English, that they pay taxes, that they act and behave like good citizens. But abusing good citizens or good people who want to be good citizens is not right. And it is just as important that we do NOT give citizenship to bad people.

And Mexicans, like everybody else, are not all good or bad.
