This printed review of the interview makes it seem like Stewart is being much more “hardball” than he really is. Reading it, I get the impression that Stewart is going for the jugular, and Matthews is steaming mad and arguing back.

Then you watch the video and it seems like they’re just joking around and laughing through the whole thing. Laughter with an edgy undercurrent, yes.

But I think if Stewart wanted to eviscerate Chrissy Fit, he should have just done so, no holds barred, and should have shelved the I’m-just-a-comedian-I-might-not-really-mean-this persona.

Nervous laughter. Stewart undoubtedly felt very uncomfortable attacking a fellow lefty in such a way, and laughing helped ease the tension. Kudos to him, though -- he did it.
