Giuliani claims Christian support

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Facing a barrage of questions about his appeal to conservative voters, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani claimed Wednesday that religious conservatives will embrace him because at least they know where he stands.

...Giuliani’s claim about his appeal to religious conservatives includes the implicit acknowledgment that he is not one of them. And that points to Giuliani’s dilemma in trying to appeal to the Republican Party’s base without drawing fire for pandering.

Indeed, Giuliani refused to accept the label of “effectively pro-life,” which is how a key supporter, Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Texas), referred to the former mayor in an interview this week with CBN’s David Brody.

Asked if he embraces that label, Giuliani chuckled and said: “No. I think I’ve explained my position on that about as clearly as I can, about as often as I can. If people want to put labels on it, they can put labels on it.”

Giuliani’s remarks followed threats by several prominent social conservatives to support a third-party candidate if he wins the Republican presidential nomination.

“Maybe people of faith can respect someone who’s honest with them,” Giuliani said as a huge crush of reporters jostled for position with their microphones and tape recorders. “With me, you know what you’re going to get. I mean, I explain to you who I am. I tell you who I am. You can figure out the areas you agree, the areas you disagree. It’s not like five different positions on every issue.”

How on earth can he claim Christian support when he’s a Catholic?

Hmm...sounds like a plan. In fact, I promise to vote third party if Rudy wins the nomination.

I will vote R if anyone else is the nominee.

This is NOT the place to bait Catholics. Catholics, Evangelicals, conservative Protestants, Mormons, Orthodox Jews, and socially conservative others have to ally on the political issues on which we agree. You are not helping with wrongheaded, self-indulgent comments like that one.

I understand that plenty of non-Catholic Christians support Catholic Supreme Court Justices Alito/Roberts/Thomas/Scalia .

I agree.

If you want to start a religious argument, start a thread and post it in the Religious area of FreeRepublic, whatever that is.

This is not the place, nor the time!

I am a Christian and because I DO KNOW where he stands I will not vote for him.

I'd guess most of the Christian support he has is among Christians that don't know how radically liberal he is on social issues. That is in case with about half of all Republican voters.

That's why the Rasmussen poll is better indicator of how the primaries will go.

Giuliani certainly has my support. Anybody does who will defeat the worthless, depraved, mendacious, self-serving anti-American Democrats.

” . . . religious conservatives will embrace him because at least

they know where he stands.”

Sure we do: he’s in favor of abortion, gun confiscation and illegal aliens.
And that’s just for starters . . . .

Sometimes it’s not so easy
To be the teacher’s pet
Temptation, frustration
So bad it makes him cry

His car is warm and dry

Don’t stand, don’t stand so
Don’t stand so close to me
Don’t stand, don’t stand so
Don’t stand so close to me
