ANNAPOLIS Gov. Martin O'Malley's plan to close the state budget shortfall would raise at least $7.6 billion in taxes over the next five years, according to an analysis of figures released by the governor's office.
The plan, which Mr. O'Malley, a Democrat, made public last week, also would include about $1.9 billion in new spending beyond what is needed to close Maryland's estimated five-year, $6.9 billion budget shortfall, according to an analysis by The Washington Times.
The O'Malley administration has responded by saying the governor has "put forward a comprehensive, long-term plan to address the structural deficit that reduces spending growth by more than a billion over two year."
O'Malley spokesman Rick Abbruzzese also said the plan "makes our tax structure fairer for working families."
The analysis uses numbers presented by the governor's office over the last two weeks and represents the five-year impact of the governor's plan.
Mr. O'Malley has yet to file his proposal with the General Assembly, but state budget analysts say his estimates appear to be sound.
"I think we have a pretty good idea about what the magnitude should be," said Warren Deschenaux, chief budget analyst for the Assembly.
Mr. Deschenaux said analysts are awaiting bills from the governor's office and that it is too early to judge Mr. O'Malley's unsupported claim that 83.5 percent of Marylanders would pay less under his plan.

Which translates to; he’s going to take all the money from the people who actually work. Governor Lilmarty, now doing what he did to Baltimore on a statewide level!
Yup..and he made no attempt to cut any spending...except education.
The people of Maryland will rue the day they voted this clown in. Ehrlich was doing a much better job...too bad his death warrant was signed because he’s a Republican in a 2/3 registered Dem state.
Hey, the Free State’s loss may create a conservative boom in PA; statewide conservative flight.
“Governor Lilmarty, now doing what he did to Baltimore on a statewide level!”
just like Rendell and Philly

MICHIGAN part deux?
Tax the taxes. Tax them when they take a dump. Kick the overtaxed.
Did he mention this plan BEFORE he got elected?
odd, I don’t stutter in RL
What a mistake O’Malley is going to be to MD. I live in the central part of the state and once again, us hardworking Fredneckers are about to get hosed - with no recourse.
Gotta love that power of the government to reach into my pocket with their grimy fingers and snatch out a few for the “working families” in our great state. Gimme a break, I send along enough already.
Yes but he stood firm on BGE electric rates, our air conditioning was almost free. Remember, his taxes make the system fairer LOL.
So they over spent their budget by $6.9 billion? They should all be fired. Who gave them the right to over spend that budget? You want to get their attention, cut their pay for every month they are in office until they correct the problem, without taxing the people. It’s not the peoples fault and they shouldn’t be taxed for the inadequate policys of their government.
No they won't, because the ones that voted for him pay little or no taxes. And the ones who will get screwed didn't vot for him anyway. What a wonderful life. Get your neighbors' money by voting Democrat every 4 years. The head of the NAACP doesn't live in Maryland by accident.
I am so looking forward to campaigning against this clown in a couple years.
Bend Over Maryland...take it like Baltimore did.
Asshole. That SOB O’Malley is even pissing off the liberals who voted for him.
The stickers would have said Enjoy Your Higher Taxes Jackasses
Yes I live in Maryland.
GRRRRR.......
Our problem in MD
Senate - 33 Democrats and 14 Republicans.
House - 104 Democrats and 37 Republicans.
NEVER gonna change and 1/2 of the republicans are...shall we say... a little less than conservative.
I would either move from MD or start a revolution.
