He already was toast. He had made a similar statement earlier, it just needed to be replayed by the republicans if he had won the primary which was unlikely.
This guy could never have played to the middle.

The very last thing that the US should want is a world without nuclear weapons. Our potential enemies vastly outnumber us in manpower, and we no longer hold the dominant position in industrial capacity that was so crucial to winning WWII.
The only viable threat we have to deter powerful enemies in the future is our nuclear arsenal and the means to deliver it anywhere on the globe. If we throw that away in the name of "peace" as naive liberals such as Obama would have us do we will be throwing away our only hope for avoiding certain attack by an enemy who either cheated on the agreement to destroy all nukes or who has the manpower and industrial capacity to wage and win another conventional war on the scale of WWII.
Of course the most obvious nation in that category today is China, but who can say what other nation or nations could develop a similar capacity in the future? Perhaps a consolidation of all or most all of the Islamic states into one nuclear armed alliance? If that ever happens you can be sure that a nuclear armed alliance of fundamentalist Islamic states will not be our friend.

How does this make the world safer? Shuffling around the stockpile and “destroying” it leaves plenty of opportunity for corrupt figures around the world to sell some nuclear materials to terrorists.
But it certainly keeps us from having a nuclear stalemate (which has probably done MORE to limit the level of wars than anything else).

In 2009, we will have a window of opportunity to renew our global leadership and bring our nation together Dear Barack: You may not have noticed, but there are rising powers in the world that want to remove our global leadership completely. The only way we can hang on to any semblance of global leadership is if those hostile powers know without a doubt that we still pack a potential nuclear strike capability. Do you really think that Russia and China are going to dismantle all their weapons? Iran? Pakistan? Terrorists?
Don't you realize that they want us crippled or dead? Let's stop petting unicorns and get with the program. If you want to bring this country together, make it the strongest country in the world. Elimination of all our weapons would not bring peace; it would bring submission.

the United States should greatly reduce its stockpiles to lower the threat of nuclear terrorism,The U.S. stockpile is the last place any terrorist would look for nuclear materials.

yea right, and who gives ‘em up first? This is as bad as putting a complete ban on guns. Only criminals would own the nukes and the guns. I’m starting to wonder what type of morons he’s trying to impress.

Yup. Great idea. We have at least two enemies with population bases of over one billion from which to recruit and Obama wants to eliminate the one weapon that can hold ‘em in check.
Ya know, there is something in the oath of office about enemies foreign and domestic. I think we need to start lookin' into do something about the domestic enemies. At the very least we need to stop electing them...

Reminds me of a great film about British SAS called
Final Option where the inevitable terrorists are holding hostages at the American embassy in Britain and are demanding the world destroy it's nuclear arsenals. One of the Ambassador's military aides is sarcastic:
Yeah, but I'll bet you really want the western Democracies to disarm FIRST, right? I wonder why?Check his background: Barack Obama is heavily invested with Socialist groups all over the country.
