In 1936, the argument was made that Slippery Rock's football team ought to have been ranked #1 in the country ahead of Pitt and Minnesota.
The announcement of Slippery Rock's football scores is a tradition at University of Michigan football games. The tradition was started in the 1950s by Michigan Stadium's public address announcer. Slippery Rock was so popular with UM fans that on Sept. 29, 1979, Slippery Rock played Shippensburg in an NCAA Division II game at Michigan Stadium, setting the record for attendance at a Div. II football game (61,143).
