Arnold Schwarzenegger is a lame duck Republican governor, albeit a fairly popular one who touts his environmental credentials and has ambitious plans on health care, infrastructure and education reform.
Barbara Boxer is a U.S. senator who has gained some clout on environmental issues now that Democrats have regained control of the Senate but who, as usual, has a less-than-commanding approval rating among California voters.
As it happens, Schwarzenegger's and Boxer's current terms expire simultaneously three years hence, raising the intriguing scenario that the one-time action movie star -- barred from seeking the presidency because of his Austrian birth -- would seek to extend his political career by challenging Boxer in 2010.
The governor is being coy, but those around him talk about the possibility of a U.S. Senate bid, either challenging Boxer in 2010 or running for Sen. Dianne Feinstein's seat two years later should Feinstein, who would then be 79 years old, signal that she's ready to retire.
The first question is whether Schwarzenegger -- or his outsized ego -- could adjust to being just one of 100 after being the center of political attention in California.

I don’t think Schwarzeggar would be “lost” among 100. In fact, it might be interesting to see The Terminator on a Senate committee.
Ahnold wouldn’t win. Californian voters will always prefer a real Marxist to a wannabe.
California absolutely loves celebrity!
Barbara or Arnold, what’s the difference? Either one would ruin the economy with this Global Warming crap.
Be great to see the Terminator take out Botox Babbling Babs.
California absolutely loves celebrity!

especially ones with expensive tastes.. apparently
Can you imagine what he can do for this country after witnessing what he has helped the dems to continue to do to this state.
He may have blocked the left on a few issues but on many more, he is leading them and the state over the precipice into the abyss..
Alternatives? apparently there are none. The Ca GOP as it is currently constituted is clueless. Enjoy the ride to the bottom.
He would be a HUGE improvement.
He has been so much better than the ousted Grey Davis. He’s a RINO, but he’s not a total lefty.
lol.. nice try, no cigar, imo. ;-)
I beg to differ, he is the worse kind of politician to have arrived on the scene when and as he did..
True,, he signed off repealing the VLF fees rate hikes, he held high ground for no DLs for illegals, no gay marrige out of one side of his mouth, and supposedly no new taxes,, which is a bit of a fiction in reality as the state has pushed back responsibilities for imposing taxes , fees, whatever back to local gubamint,, all the while saying he was willing to support apporval of them eventually if courts say its OK.
He has Kennedys in both ears and who knows where else..
The cost we will pay for that trade-off will be hugh over the long haul, it’s effects near-term already push this state into debt for years to come..
‘FRaid the once great state is beyond repair with thewrecking crew we have at the helm today..may take a calamity of epic proportion to change its direction, ain;t gnna happen with a RINO muc less a weak-kneed Dem or Pub in office.
Yep. That’s an election I’d skip. Increasingly, especially in California, but also nationwide, this is pretty much the choice we’re being given. Real democrat vs. “California Republican.”
I won't argue that.
But with Boxer or Arnie, one thing is for sure: WE Lose!
Arnold has been far worse than Gray Davis ever was on just about every issue. No contest.
Actually, when Gray was cornered during the Recall Election, he decided that his only choice was pandering to his base, and boy, did he pander. At that point, Gray Davis was the absolute worst Governor that California has ever had, including the Browns.
Yeah, his pandering was sickening for those few months. But those things, had they played out, would have left us better off than we are. The drivers license referendum was well on its way, as was the car tax referendum. And Gay Marriage is sitting in the courts, just as it would have been.
What Gray Davis would not been able to do is to roust support for record spending increases, unconstitutional borrowing, the Sierra Nevada Conservancy (which he vetoed twice), global warming regulation, Cap-and-Trade programs, and taxpayer subsidies for solar roofs, stem-cell research, etc. Gray Davis is looking like a moderate compared the the Austrian.
How has Arnold been worse than Grey?
If it wasn’t for Arnold, we’d have gay marriage right now. He reformed the state pension system and our economy is doing much, much better. He is also not taking bribes! He’s focusing state funds on infrastructure instead of social programs. He is certainly a step in the right direction in my book.
See above:
The drivers license referendum was well on its way, as was the car tax referendum. And Gay Marriage is sitting in the courts, just as it would have been [Arnold wants the "courts to decide"--and he has passed more pro-homosexual legislation than any governor in history!]. He reformed the state pension system and our economy is doing much, much better.
Now, your turn. What exactly did Arnold do to reform the state pension system?
He is also not taking bribes!
LOL. Don't follow the news much, I see. Two words: General Motors (to name one).
Hes focusing state funds on infrastructure instead of social programs. He is certainly a step in the right direction in my book.
Infrastructure? Developing a trading system for global warming carbon credits is NOT infrastructure. Nor are flex-fuel vehicles, or a host of other things that bond money is going to. He is funding things that should have come out of the general fund with BORROWED MONEY. Fiscally, the state is MUCH worse off than when Gray Davis left office, with a $6 billion deficit, half the debt we have today, and spending 30+ percent lower.
