The dustup over Fox commentator Bill O'Reilly's remarks about black culture was much ado about nothing - and a reminder of the clanging hypocrisies and shameful silences that pass for public discussion of race relations in America.
I've met O'Reilly only a couple of times and have no idea what makes him tick. But the comments, especially when heard in context, were obviously O'Reilly's awkward way of trying to enlighten a segment of his audience - and for that he should be commended, not condemned.

It is obvious that Hillary and George Soros have launched a joint massive character assassination agaist any and all political opponents in the media. Beginning with Imus (liberal but virulently anti-Hillary), now with the two biggest professionals in the business: O’Reilly and Rush.
The truly despicable Soros funded fronts of MoveOn.Org and Media Matters (the latter full of Hillary staff) are really, really bad liars. They are simply making stuff up and grotesquely taking things out of context.
And as such they are beginning to lose credibility, MUCH too soon in the electoral process. This is a bad strategic move.
They aren’t alone, Bill Reilly launched a dishonest and vicious attack on freerepublic a few weeks ago on his television show.
True. O’Reilly is no friend of FR. On the other hand, the Media Matters attack was a preposterous lie.
His attack was made up, it had no basis and it involved labeling us nationally as a racist web site.
Although you can’t really apologize for a deliberate lie that will haunt the victim forever and damage their effect on the very cause that they exist to promote, O’Reilly never even tried.
This is simply two of the same attacking each other.
By burning the bridge, he did not leave any wiggle room for us to care about his being a victim of a false racism charge.
I only took his reasons for Bill O’Reilly’s so called smear for two reasons.
1) I really don’t think he knows a lot about web sites and so he has his staff give him tips. So I don’t think he knows one way or the other about what sites are what on his own. When he gave this site as his example of a smear web site on the right, that this is about the only one he could come up with that is well known and I don’t think he would just say that he doesn’t know. That wouldn’t be like him either.
2) It also sounded like he was trying to promote his own site. I am a member of his web page but I never go to his message boards. The last I visited they are way too restrictive as far as how much you can post. Sometimes it takes a whole lot more to express yourself. I don’t think I could even get this on just one posting on his message board. I would have to break it up.
You will notice that he never said what would be good examples of good places to go. And I think he is also bothered by having to pay for what some here does for free... out of caring about this site which I don’t think he has anyone doing for that reason so he needs to fork over some money to have it done.
NOT that I defending him. I just figure I know his reasons.
I really DO enjoy watching him rag on the ultra liberal types. They sure need it in the worse way.

I watched it, I don’t watch him anymore, he is a despicable liar and smear artist. He longer has any credibility.
Now that I know just how incredibly dishonest he is, it no longer is credible even when he is criticizing some one I dislike.
He does not deserve to be a commentator in the respectable world.
I personally was kind of offended when O'Reilly was talking about his Irish grandmother. He practically called his own grandmother a racist and it backfired on him. He should never trash his own relatives just to make a point.
Live by the sword - die by the sword
O'Reilly claimed an FR poster wrote "Homosexuals are dogs" - that was a blatant lie.
The posting actually said "homosexuals are modern day dogs in the manager".
So O'Reilly, who, as a former schoolteacher, really ought to have sufficient education to know about Aesop's Fables, completely changed the context AND meaning through judicious editing - just like Media Matters...
The old saying "a jack of all trades, master of none" best describes his "investigative journalism."
He tries to be relevant in too many areas and therefore does a poor job in all of them
He depended on staff to find a right wing hate website, and they chose FreeRepublic; eventually much to his chagrin.
Sure he went for it, I am sure he was aware of the many times his stories were torn apart on FR and injected with the truth that he missed.
I have seen several posts by FR people that say that FR has treated him unfairly and flamed him for no reason.
Those type of instances were few and far between and probably posted by marginal people that just wanted to rant on him for some reason.
And O'Reilly is much to proud and egotistical to ever apologize.
If he would take the time to see how grotesque and false his critique of Fr was he still wouldn't apologize, but if he did he would have a great ally to fight for him. But he blew it and is now disliked and not watched by a large group that could be on his side when he gets attacked by liberal people/groups. His loss.
Hannity had a problem with FR for a while because some on here were able to show his weakness in reporting, interviewing, etc.
He got over it just fine and did not go off on FR as O'Reilly did.
Drudge, Lucianne, Hannity and Limbaugh all have had their differences with this site, but that has not stopped them from perusing FR for news tidbits that appear here quite ahead of virtually all other Internet sites and media sources.
They usually don't credit this site but do mention it ocassionally (well except for Drudge AFAIK), but who cares? Sometimes it is so obvious it is ridiculous but is no biggie.
I have been in dozens of Black owned and operated restaurants (a few of them dozens of times), mostly family owned rib joints.
I have NEVER heard anyone use the vernacular that O'Reilly used to describe what he didn't hear there. (The get me some MF'n ice tea thingie) (As an aside, last week surfing through the TV channels, I came upon a great parody of his visit to Sylvia's in Harlem. It was hilarious and when it was over I saw it was on the John Stewart show, which I do not watch)
His bubble problem. Probably the first Black restaurant he had ever been in. He stereotyped Blacks from the Rap Music he had been "investigating" and he made a fool out of himself with his uninformed statement.
I wouldn't call it racism, but certainly would call it ignorant and uninformed, and definitely stereotyping.
