Thousands fled then. So many more wished they had. The Shah wasn’t the terrible dictator that the press has made him out to be.
I hope Iran is free from these murdering b#st#rds soon.

When I was at UT, I lived in a near-campus complex and BBQd on my patio often. I wound up cooking for Texas football players (their stairwell was above my pit) and also for an Iranian student, studying law, who professed the same opinions as your friend.

Are you Iranian?
I recall him also talking about the Shah and the realities of his rule. Like you said, quite different from what Carter and the left portrayed him to be.

I learned a lot from him. He tried to teach me some phrases, but I long ago forgot the few words that he taught me. He swore that I could get women with the phrases. :-)

My Iranian neighb was just the funniest, cleverest, laser-sharp, engaging guy.. unlike the islamos over here who just exude hostility and hatred to all we Americans they're forced to deal with everyday.
Never occured to me to ask him his religion.

Same for my old classmate. He never mentioned his own faith. I do know that he wanted Iran to be what it once was and that included being religiously tolerant. Just like your neighbour, this guy was a happy-go-lucky sort.

If W can give Iran back to the true Persians, excellent.
Next stop, House of Saud.
