Frontrunner Giuliani Leading Among Most Republican Subgroups
Gallup Organization ^ | 28 September 2007 | Jeffrey M. Jones

Posted on 09/30/2007 11:11:12 AM PDT by shrinkermd

PRINCETON, NJ -- Rudy Giuliani has led the field of Republican candidates for the 2008 presidential nomination in every Gallup Poll since January. In the most recent nationwide poll of Republicans, 30% name Giuliani as their first choice for the party's nomination, giving him an eight-point lead over second place Fred Thompson who registers 22% support. John McCain is in third place at 18% and Mitt Romney is in fourth at 7%, with the five other announced candidates all polling at 4% or less.

While nowhere near as dominant as the Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton, Giuliani, like Clinton, leads among most subgroups within his party [see Related Items]. In fact, Giuliani does no worse than tie for first in each of a number of key Republican demographic groups. But some of Giuliani's weakest showings are among subgroups of the party not likely to embrace his current or past pro-choice, pro-gay rights, and pro-gun control positions -- Southerners, weekly churchgoers, Protestants, and men -- in particular married men.

These insights are drawn from an aggregation of 1,690 interviews with Republicans and Republican-leaning independents taken from four Gallup surveys conducted in August and September. The analysis is primarily limited to the relative standings of the top four Republican candidates, since the minor candidates' support tends to show little meaningful variation by subgroup.

Ideology

Republicans are roughly twice as likely to describe their political views as "conservative" than as either "moderate" or "liberal." Giuliani has a lead among moderate and liberal Republicans as well as conservative Republicans, but his lead is much larger among the former group (21 points vs. 7 points). Thompson and McCain tie as the second place candidate among moderate and liberal Republicans, but Thompson is a clear second among the much larger conservative group.

Why would you omit Fridays Ras poll? In that one Fred is down to a 2 point advantage. 24-22. Now I don’t think this is a trend, but at least be honest when you are complaining that this article does not use the most up to date numbers.
Ras is also the only poll that has had Fred up consistently. I think it is going to be very close and it could go either way.

Also see the averages of all polls, and Rudy is consistently up.

As a likely primary voter...it’s not going to be Rudy whom gets my vote, and I doubt he’ll be getting many of us.

“last Guiliani poll was 9/16
last poll OVERALL is 9/23 has Thompson +5
This has not been updated in a while.
Why is the MSM not reporting this weeks numbers? Are they trying to see if the “Save the NYC lawyer” stories needing to sink in?”

Actually, the even newer poll has Thompson at plus 6%, a gain over the previous one .

“The MSM is struggling to keep Guiliani ahead.”

I totally believe that. The MSM would love nothing better than for Rudy to be the nominee. He has way to much baggage and I don’t mean his extra marital affairs or the silly pictures in drag. Check out the upcoming FBI SSA Lin DeVecchio trial and his handling of Greg Scarpa SR. The trial is coming up and DeVecchio has threatened to not fall on his sword and will name names of his superiors.

“Why would you omit Fridays Ras poll? In that one Fred is down to a 2 point advantage. 24-22. “

Because I didn’t know that it existed, if you click on this link you will see what I thought was the absolute latest poll, 9/23 to 9/26.

I don’t think that finding a 2 point difference on Fridays Ras is going to lead posters to conclude that I was trying to deceive anyone, as posting this outdated article was intended to do.

Rasmussen is updated, the rest of the polls used for the average are old.

So to continue to ignore Rasmussen by including the non recent polls is not much to cling to.

Fred Thompson is the frontrunner.

Thanks for the post. I have said all along that Rudy will do better in Dixie than most believe. He was a trooper in 02 and 04 campaigning for GOP congressional candidates there. He’s got to have some chits he can call in from some of those folks. He does not have to even come close to winning the majority of delegates in Dixie to win the nomination. He should win Florida. The perception of Rudy as having the toughness to take on the terrorists in not hurting him either. Plenty of folks also admire him for mixing it up with the jackasses. He’s going to have to downplay his liberal stance on too many issues if he’s going to win. If he does win, he’s going to have to focus on those issues where he resonates with conservatives. I will sleep well at night knowing that the enemies of the USA will have to deal with him. I will not sleep well if Mrs Bill Clinton is Commander-in- Chief. I will definitely not sleep well if she’s backed up by a congress with more jackasses in it.

But wait, Rudy SAID he would pick conservative judges, and don’t politicians keep their campaign promises. (sarcasm)

I don’t trust him to pick pro-life, conservative judges, because presidents always at least TRY to pick a nominee that matches their ideology.

Even Rudy admitted this when he said:

“Presidents, going back to the beginning of the republic, generally appoint people on the Supreme Court that they believe agree with them.”

I don’t know how much the GOP voters really values the border.

The fact that Giuliani and McCain are still polling well shows as much.

McCain’s campaign is on life support. What is he around 11%?

The MSM reports the irrelevant and supports only their personal choices onto the reporting.

You should post the parts of Gallup that hint at the real story. Among those Republicans extremely likely to vote, even Gallup, a quintessential MSM Establishment poll trying desperately to pump up Guiliani concedes that Thompson and Guiliani are essentially tied. And this was before Mitt Romney’s free fall began in earnest:

“There is a bit of good news for Thompson in the poll, however. He fares better among those Republican voters who appear most likely to vote in the primaries this year than he does among general Republicans and Republican-leaners.

Overall, 61% of Republicans say it is “extremely likely” that they will vote in the Republican primary or caucus in their state when it is held next year. Giuliani and Thompson are essentially tied among this group, with McCain a solid third place. No other Republican candidate receives double-digit support among this group of voters.

As conservatives, including social cons and the NRA coalesce around Thompson and the comparison ads begin, Rudy Guiliani is going to drop like a stone. In fact, his descent has already begun. Rudy Guiliani is an electoral paper tiger.
