CARROLLTON, Ga. — Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich on Saturday decided against running for president in 2008 after determining he could not legally explore a bid and remain head of his tax-exempt political organization.

Gingrich, 64, said the change of heart, which came as aides readied the NewtNow.org Web site and prepared to file campaign papers, was the result of legal advice that running for president would require stepping down as chairman of his organization, American Solutions (for Winning the Future).

I’ve got a love-hate relationship with Newt. I love that he’s brilliant and hate that he’s not running, if for no other reason than he’d make all the GOP candidates dine at the table of real conservatives.

He may be of more value to the GOP in an advisory capacity.

He has way too much personal baggage to run for President in today’s environment.

Ya know if Gingrich wanted to do something constructive, he would run for the U.S. Senate from GA and run on TERM LIMITS!
The only way conservatives are gonna turn this country around is to take back the majority of the Senate, House, get rid of the “Lifers” in Congress & put a true blue conservative in the WH!

Most of us don’t know the truth about why Gingrich decided against running. A McCain-Feingold regulation prevents middle class candidates from using funding from organizations like Gingrich’s American Solutions for Winning the Future. He can’t get enough money to have a chance at becoming president. If he were to run and communicate at all with his organization during the campaign, he would be charged with a criminal offense. Rich candidates, on the other hand, can use $100 million of their own money to prevail.

Fred Thompson voted in favor of the 1997 McCain-Feingold overhaul of campaign finance.

Have fun with your class war, volks, while I get away from it all.

Just go to c-span and watch a rerun of him whining about getting off the back of the plane and you will be ok.

He has a brilliant political mind. He’ll do much better behind the scenes as a campaign advisor to THOMPSON / HUNTER Ticket.

Other than Rudi, none of them have the kind of personal baggage that Newt has.

Ummm, dems get a pass from the MSM on any and all "baggage".

And Republicans who can't win get temporary passes.

Newt would get nothing - not the smallest pass in the world. The MSM would slaughter him. Slaughter him for something a Kennedy would be privately praised for..

It's not what baggage a person has - it's what party they belong to. And Newt belongs to the party the MSM loves to hate. Sad, the countries loss...
