Christian leaders threaten to abandon Republicans

WASHINGTON – Some of the top leaders in Christian pro-family activism – including James Dobson of Focus on the Family – met in Salt Lake City yesterday to plot a strategy if Rudy Giuliani or another supporter of legalized abortion is nominated by the Republican Party as its presidential candidate.

Not only was there a consensus among activists to withhold support for the Republican nominee, there was even discussion about supporting the entry of a new candidate to challenge the frontrunners.

It's no secret that Dobson, founder of one of the largest Christian ministries in the country, has no use for Giuliani.

In June, he said: "I cannot, and will not, vote for Rudy Giuliani in 2008. It is an irrevocable decision. If given a Hobson's – Dobson's? – choice between him and Sens. Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama, I will either cast my ballot for an also-ran – or if worse comes to worst – not vote in a presidential election for the first time in my adult life. My conscience and my moral convictions will allow me to do nothing else."

Dobson reportedly drove from his headquarters Colorado Springs to the private meeting, held between sessions of the Council for National Policy in Salt Lake City this weekend, just to weigh in with other leaders of family groups, including the Family Research Council, Bott Broadcasting, Capitol Resource Institute, Salem Communications, Eagle Forum and Concerned Women for America

Dr. Dobson and his associates should announce who they would support for President and why they support them. That would be more helpful than passively leaking that they cannot support a certain candidate without saying why.

They can't box themselves in like that. Dobson is already throwing Thompson under the bus for not going to church enough. He may yet need to do the same to Hunter or Tancredo because they like dancing or something.

Perhaps, but as a very conservative Christian, I can tell you most Christians I know could give a hoot what James Dobson or any other preacher thinks. In many cases, a Dobson/Robertson endorsement will drive off people.

I'll give you this example, and I know many Freepers do NOT want to hear this, but it is fact and more widespread than people know: in the 2000 campaign, I was at a local donut shop frequented by people on their way to work. I was seated behind four businessmen---salesmen or realtors, as best I could tell. They were discussing the campaign. These were OBVIOUS and NATURAL GOP VOTERS, and they were saying about Bush, "I think he's too connected to the religious right." and, "I don't like his connections to Falwell." Now, ignore for a minute what, if any, "connections" Bush had to Falwell. The point is, there are millions of those natural GOP voters who, for whatever reason, are repelled by what THEY view as "fundamentalist" Christianity.

If a political party cannot find other things to attract them without driving off believers, then we are finished as a party anyway. By one survey---"Did you REALLY go to church last week?"---pollsters for Christianity Today found that while a majority of people say they are "churchgoers," if you ask the question about going to church last week, the number drops to about 25%.

Exactly. He has already “dissed” Fred Thompson, too.

While I hate Guilani's positions on abortion and firearms rights, he has been consistent on the most important issue of our time which is winning the war against islamic terrorism.

Then he's effectively fooled you. He couldn't more inconsistent about the WOT. The WOT is not only in Iraq or Afghanistan. It is global including our border with Mexico. It is a fact terrorists have entered through the Mexican border posing as illegal immigrants and yet Rudy supports amnesty for illegal aliens. he recently stated illegal immigration is not a crime! This type of thinking is dangerous at best as it only invites more attacks on our own soil!

has anyone heard of any legitimate reason why they aren’t 100% behind DH? He would seem an obvious choice.

See my #61. He may yet show heathen tendencies, like dancing, or having an occasional beer. :-)

I agree with your statement and I only wish there were many more GOP voters that felt the same. Unfortunately, I don’t find that to be the case and I am beginning to question if the GOP is the conservative party or the “get elected” party.

It might even be accurate to describe them as the “beat Hillary” party. Dobson, Hillary, Rudy et al can do whatever they wish; I am voting for Hunter. I don’t go around “talking” conservative, I am a conservative and that is how I am going to vote. If we don’t believe our conservative values, principles or beliefs can stand against the opposition, then I am not quite sure who will believe nor see a reason that they should.

Dobson doesn’t represent millions of us Christian and we all have sense enough to see the big picture and that is, Hillary must be kept out of the White House.

For the record, I am looking at the candidate, Fred Thompson, not the GOP,as are millions of other voters.

That is not the big picture. That is an extremely narrow view.

There are a whole lot of people who ignore just how 'religious' the Clintons are perceived to be via a Johnson liberal preacher.... to even make note of this worldly renowned preacher bringing up the Clintons to sit on his come to Jesus altar offends many.

Many people close their eyes to the fact that two thirds of this nation continuously polled in the affirmative of the Clintons throughout their presidency and those people are still a part of the Clintons base, very religious.

sorry but that is pure hogwash.

If he was serious, he would be putting his people in the local party machines, putting his people in the causus votes, and he can even push to have like minded delegates.

He is lost in the ether.

Why do you think the GOP only support RUDY? YOU have no proof of this and Rudy has to raise his own money.

I had a knock down drag out a couple of weeks ago with a Rudy Supporter because Fred Announced. Don’t blame the GOP overall for this, this is about a differing of Ideologies. I have discovered that Northerners see Conservatism much different that what the true definition of Conservatism truly means. The sad part, the person I had a run in with never “got it” he only attacked me because he realized I supported Fred.

It is important that Dobson understand that electing Clinton by throwing away Republican votes will bring his heart misery he has yet to imagine.

It is important that the Republican National Committee understand that if the Republican nominee is pro-abortion, they have already sided with the enemy and conservatism has already lost that electoral battle.

You believe what YOU must believe and I’ll stick with my beliefs. Stop with the Ad hominems...as for my view...I see a Republic (what is left of a Republic) and have no desire to live in a Socialist nation.

If you can’t have a discussion, then don’t post to me. Thanks so much.

Dobson’s disgust... if acted upon... will turn into LIVING HELL.

The party has good reason, then, to pick a pro-life nominee.

The problem with this and all like statements is that it leads one to believe that the GOP leadership selects the candidate. It doesn't.

No, but the party can and will pick who it throws its support behind. For example, one of my senators is Liddy Dole. The decision to run her for Senate wasn't made in Raleigh...it was made in Washington.

Yes. Many Freepers assume that even "fundamentalist" Christians automatically are antiabortion. It simply isn't so, but it's impossible to try to tell people here that.

Moreover, six months ago, illegal immigration was "the ONLY issue that mattered." Forget the war on terrorism. It's illegals, dammit. I'd bring up strong anti abortion senators such as Kyl, who favored the illegals bill, and was shouted down. "TRAITOR!" they called him.

So, people, how about making up your mind. Is a candidate who will fight the war on terror AND shut down illegal immigration, but who is soft on abortion acceptable or not?

Enjoy the Democrtic Party instead, they appear to be MUCH closer to the Christian Ideal. < / sacracm >

Check Christian Conservative history era late 1970's and you'll see Christian Conservatives in both parties organizing for what was a political movement to change the face of national politics. Amongst one of the main persons behind it? A registered DEM preacher from Lynchburg, Virginia. An idea born on a phrase that Paul Weyrich coined and talked about to ones such as Howard Phillips, Jerry Falwell, Dr James Kennedy, and many more became a spring board for the Conservative movement within the Republican as well as the nation itself which lasted into the 1994 elections. It was when the GOP headed by persons such as Newt and Lott, Dole, etc started giving in to the Liberal wing of the GOP the losses began. By 1996 the GOP SOLD OUT!

The GOP had best stop listening to the words of Jerry Ford "Where else can they go" and start listening to the voters that can put them in or out of office. This will be the only way the GOP sees a win in the White House in 2008 or even significant wins in the houses. The GOP/RNC better wake up if not can you say Whig Party?

Then he should go with the formulat that worked in the past by putting his supporters in the local parties, in the caucuses, in the delegate status.

This cry baby BS is beneath him.
