Yeah, but next week he’ll start flirting with the cameras again.

John Kasich would be a great running mate for Thompson. I know he supported Clinton’s Crime Bill, but other than that mistake he is a solid conservative, very popular in Ohio and his native Pennsylvania, and he strongly supports and advocates smaller government and balanced budgets. I think you could safely take Ohio out of the tossup category (and add Pennsylvania to the tossup list) if Kasich was the VP nominee.

Yes, this about the least surprising decision since HRC threw her bonnet into the ring.

I disagree,
Gingrich had little chance of winning the nomination and even less of winning the general. His presence would serve only to dilute conservative votes and present Guiliani the nomination on a silver platter.

Perhaps Newt and Huckabee can run as independents together?

I didn’t know Kasich was originally from PA, but I suspect he is already forgotten in OH and could no more win that tough state than Kucinich could.

Newt is a great strategist but a poor candidate.
Whoever is the nominee would be wise to quietly hire him for his ideas and articulation. But only with a strict secrecy agreement.

Newt got something good, I bet.We need him and Haley Barbour running the RNC again, between the clowns they got their now and the House and Senate Leadership will have us wandering in the desert for 40 more years if we so not get someone with direction and cojones.
To: Theodore R.; moose2004
John Kasich is one of the best in our party. A great and courageous man. If anyone deserves credit for battling Bill Clinton over the budget it is John Kasich.Hell he's better then anyone in the race right now, Fred included.

Well, according to Newt, she has an 80% chance of winning. He must know something the rest of us don’t.

Good, I would hate for yet another politician I like, but can’t support for President, to run. He is doing well right where he is.

“Perhaps Newt and Huckabee can run as independents together?” ~ jwalsh07
The headline is that “Newt will not seek the ‘presidency’ in ‘08”, not that he won’t seek the Republican nomination in ‘08.
What could happen, however, is for him to announce today that he is endorsing a specific candidate for the presidency because that candidate has indicated he is committed to Newt’s “American Solutions” platform and is the one most capable of articulating it (other than Newt) in the presidential debates.
It could be that Huckabee will be getting Newt’s endorsement today, and that Newt will encourage people who were planning on pledging monetary support for him, to instead give their backing to Huckabee.
I say that for two reasons: #1 Because Newt has said many times that the only way he’ll into the race is if no other candidate is interested in adopting his “Winning the Future” ideas, and #2 Because Huckabee is the only presidential candidate who is heading up one of Newt’s workshops this weekend at the conference in Atlanta, to wit:
American Solutions for Winning the Future

One of the “workshops” is being handled by Mike Huckabee Saturday between 4 and 5 PM:

Good. The only way a dimocrat can win is with a third party in the race.
God willing, we've learned this history lesson well enough not to repeat it...again.
